  • Summary: [Xbox Live Arcade] EA SPORTS Freestyle welcomes you to the fast-paced world of arcade hockey. From the same team that brought you NHL 09 comes 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, a 3-on-3 experience that throws conventional hockey, and its rules, out the window. Choose from the NHL's top players and bring them into this no-rules hockey game where big hits rule the day. Power-ups: When you see a giant skating down the ice, you'll realize this is not traditional hockey. With eight different power-ups, from speed skating to giant goalie, on-ice mayhem is the only guarantee. Online game modes: Play against a friend one-on-one online or with up to three players a side. With leaderboards and ranked/unranked match options, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade is an experience best shared. Button controls: 3 on 3 NHL Arcade features two separate control schemes, the Skill Stick featured in the past three NHL titles, and all-new button controls. With everything mapped to the face buttons, including all-new trick moves, players of all skill levels will be able to jump right into the action. Trick moves: The new control scheme introduces trick moves and spin moves to the world of NHL. Spin out of the way of an oncoming check before batting the puck out of the air and past a diving goalie. Unique presentation: Bright lights and big heads make their way to the NHL franchise. Featuring exaggerated player looks, and a miniature rink, the game boasts a unique and lighthearted tone throughout. Player types: 3 on 3 NHL Arcade splits 40 of the top NHL players, representing every team in the league, into three distinct player types. Fast players specialize in dangling, Strong players bring extra power to their hits, and All-around players play a solid two-way game of hockey. Hard checking: The all-new physics-based checking engine introduced in NHL 09 makes a return in 3 on 3 NHL Arcade with one slight difference, every hit is huge. Hit a guy just right and don't be surprised to see him fly across the length of the ice. [Electronic Arts] Expand

  1. Varying levels of seriousness in the users that gather to play 3 on 3 NHL Arcade in ranked or unranked online matches creates a fresh, party-style atmosphere that works within the confines of XBLA.
  2. This tongue-in-cheek offshoot of EA's core NHL sim is a smooth zamboni ride that mixes goofy gameplay with razor-sharp control, just as "NBA Jam" did when it pioneered this genre over 15 years ago. [Mar 2009, p.83]
  3. Hardcore hockey fans might find NHL Arcade too simple, with its lack of official teams, arenas or any kind of tournament mode. However, it's loads of fun against friends, online or off.
  4. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade is not a very bad game, but lacks some fundamental gameplay elements. The controls are, in combination with the specific type of gameplay, far from practical. On top of that, the idea of being a funny game never quite makes it with the decent look. What remains is the question: What did EA Canada had in mind when they made this game? Whatever the answer may be, it won't be enough to salvage this title.

  1. I made this account just to express my views on this game. It is amazing! Every time I play 3 on 3 with friends we laugh the whole way through, until I win. It is the most consistent fun I have ever had with a game and 3 on 3 has stood the test of time. I don't no what compelled me to buy a hockey game, but I'm glad I did. Expand

Great arcade game only for 10 is good i got on the dotw for 400 and i love it i play it online all the time and a lot play online too. Expand
  3. Even though I'm not very good at the game it has almost endless replay value. The only problem is that online opponents ALWAYS try to hit your player every second of the game. Collapse
  4. Overall I actually like the game and am satisfied with the purchase (unlike my NBA JAM purchase from EA and 50+ bucks for that 500mb game, ahah).

While this 3 on 3 Hockey game doesn't measure up with NHL 11 or anything, it's supposed to be a "break" from our more realistic style "sim" sport games. The graphics are crisp, and more importantly the game runs very smooth (good programming and game engine).

OVERA:LL: If you were a Wayne Gretzky Nintendo64 gamer like I was, you will really like this game... and will continue to think it's possible they just ported that n64 game or emulated it and now sell it, haha, which is obviously a stupid thought. It's 3 on 3 fast break'ish hockey, with simple gameplay that isn't too simple. I am a very tough grader, and no game ever gets a 10/10 from me because nothing is perfect to me, haha. 7/10 from me is like an 8.,,, game is a blast to play with old friends you used to play Gretzky 64 with,

Or, just get NHL 11 by EA,... I just got it and it rocks! (I feel bad for hating on EA for getting owned by 2k in the "Basketball" department.
