Possibly due to the lack of any real danger/reward progression, or perhaps because of the inherent visual cacophony -- which hits even harder in the perfectly playable, yet crazily hectic, two-player multiplayer co-op game -- Galaxy eventually feels more than a bit repetitious.
  2. An XBLA title that is worth its weight in Gold Memberships. The frantic pace and satisfying gameplay will appeal to fans of space shooters. However, if you're not a particularly skilled gamer, or you've got carpal tunnel issues, I would suggest sticking to the surfeit of quality puzzlers on XBLA.
  3. Aces of the Galaxy is certainly not for everyone. Whilst the level of quality is clear and fun is certainly to be had, the game will scare off many with its fast and confusing style of gameplay.
  4. There are moments where the noise and fury onscreen coheres into an honest and intuitive arcade rush, but there are also too many where you get the impression that it simply isn't playing fair. Whether or not this is actually the case, such suspicions crank up the frustration and make the full 800-Point purchase less desirable.
  5. If you are a fan of shooters and are tired of getting your butt stomped in Ikaruga, then give Aces of the Galaxy a try.
  6. While the game is short there is plenty of replay value with multiple levels, branching mission paths and different ways to beat the level. Impressive effects are mixed with great graphics and sounds in a complete package.

Blasting alien scum, avoiding mines and meteors as you put up with the self-absorbed (yet hilarious) villains will bring out anybody's inner Alex Rogan.
  8. Aces of the Galaxy is a well-made and enjoyable 3D space shooter. Although it lacks a few desirable components and may not have great story depth or especially unique design, it is good for its pure arcade-style gameplay and can be played over and over.
  9. Aces of the Galaxy is a wild ride that isn't as dangerous a way to travel as it may first seem to be.
  10. This space shooter isn't outstanding but offers a quick arcade fix. [Sept 2008, p.84]
  11. Too short-lived to justify even the standard Live Arcade entry fee. [Aug 2008, p.113]
  12. Aces of the Galaxy is an exciting, beautiful game that captures the spirit of classic arcade space shooters.
  13. Fans of the genre will lap up the space age conflict, yet some people may be left wanting more.
  14. Aces of the Galaxy gets repetitive after a while, and the steep difficulty certainly isn’t for everyone, but those who are willing to enlist in a tough, fast, and intense shooter would do well to check this one out.

What it sometimes lacks in pacing and excitement it mostly makes up for in character and presentation. If you're at all a fan of the genre, and if you hate the Skurgians as much as we do, give this one a try.
  16. Aces of the Galaxy shines in the graphics and sound departments with solid game play that infuses the essence of classic space shooters.
  17. So mindlessly enjoyable that you'll soar right past those flaws. [May 2008, p.73]
  18. There's enough frenzied destruction to entertain for an afternoon - just leave your brain at the door. [Aug 2008, p.94]
  19. Despite its flashy looks, Aces Of The Galaxy falls well short of the crown as XBLA's best shooter, by forgetting that shooter fans care more about a challenge than they do looks.
  20. Unless you're a huge fan of on-rail space shooters, and also enjoy being a completionist then you'll be disappointed with the lack of content in Aces of the Galaxy.
  21. The white-knuckle moments that fill the experience are a blast to share with another person. But it still doesn’t make the game any easier. The mad difficulty of the game is not only what will attract gamers of a certain ilk to its crazy action, it’s also what will turn some people off. But hey, it’s an XBLA title and one of the most impressive looking ones we’ve seen yet.
  22. Despite the disappointment of the online mode, Aces of the Galaxy is a brilliantly crafted montage of many of gaming histories most successful titles.
  23. To summarise then, all the ingredients for a shooter are here, but they've been cooked at the wrong gas mark for a ludicrously short time resulting in a shoot 'em up pie that's only half baked and lacks the tasty moreishness that any good game in the genre should have from the word go.
  24. I was surprised at how good this game was, yes it borrows heavily from Starfox, but that’s a good thing.
  25. I enjoyed it, and you might too, but your mileage may vary, depending on your tolerance for repetitiveness and a steep difficulty curve.
  26. At least you don't use the right analogue stick to aim. [Issue#36, p.114]
  27. Other on-rail shooters are a lesson in design Aces of the Galaxy must have skipped. [Sept 2008, p.95]
