Contemporary gameplay mechanics for an old school setting. Blood Dragon is a hell of a ride, a little short but also a game full of fun and jokes.
  2. May 2, 2013
The whole game looks and sounds cool. In fact, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is excessive, cheesy and utterly ridiculous, but above all else, it doesn’t take itself seriously and that’s really all we ask for, seeing as we’ve been killing dinosaurs with lasers for the last several hours.
  3. May 1, 2013
While we bitched and moaned about the angles attempted (and often failed) in Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon very skillfully promises very little and delivers quite a lot. It’s more than Far Cry 3 reskinned, and the effort gone into the soundtrack, voice-acting, scripting and all that unfortunate research the team probably had to do to get their references just right, is top-notch.
  4. Apr 30, 2013
The culmination of amazing sound, throwback 8-bit cutscenes, excellent graphics, spotless presentation, and enough details from the 80’s to pack a game twice this size; Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon delivers on every front near flawlessly.
  5. Apr 30, 2013
There isn’t much that the developers at Ubisoft Montreal got wrong in this one. They took everything that made an old summer popcorn flick great and they transcribed it into an interactive feast for the senses. A potty mouthed blast from start to finish I’d have a hard time believing anyone could hate this game. Do yourself a favour and pick this one up, you’ll be glad you did.
  6. May 8, 2013
Whereas younger gamers may not understand some of the game’s references, there’s still a lot of enjoyment to be had from the game and, with a campaign as long as a number of retail titles, you certainly get your money’s worth. At 1,200 Microsoft Points, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a must purchase.
  7. Apr 30, 2013
Blood Dragon is everything that you loved about action movies from a forgotten era, mixed with a healthy does of cheese, Michael Bien, punchlines and some superb music. It's not just worth the buy. It should be an essential part of any game library.
  8. Apr 30, 2013
Rarely do I laugh my way through an entire game but even in the intense action scenes Blood Dragon is still throwing humor out every which way.
  9. Apr 30, 2013
The result of all this is a deep and well crafted premise in a somewhat shallow game. Blood Dragon is well made, and thoroughly entertaining to lovers of the eighties, but in many ways, it becomes a victim of its own success -- the core ideas are so fun, so lavishly crafted, one aches to see them in a game equal to their quality.
  10. Apr 30, 2013
If Far Cry 3 was the dinner entree when it released last year, then Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is an ice cream sundae on top of a slice of chocolate cake for dessert. It goes a bit farther than it needs to for some of its parody, but the game's core is as strong as ever wrapped in a love letter to the '80s vision of cool.
  11. Apr 30, 2013
This isn’t Far Cry 3 at its best mechanically, but it’s definitely the game at its most charismatic. Because as a bunch of well-worn VHS tapes at Ubisoft Montreal undoubtedly prove, the ’80s knew how to do personality.
  12. May 3, 2013
If you expected some hefty gameplay changes to match Blood Dragon’s turbo-rad ’80s makeover, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This standalone expansion is essentially a pared-down version of the Far Cry 3 formula with a few minor innovations, but its hysterical take on the decade of excess is well worth the price of admission.
  13. Apr 30, 2013
Blood Dragon wears its idiocy like a shield. With its mechanisms borrowed from a bona fide blockbuster and its cornball retro swagger rendering any artistic criticism surplus to requirements, all that's left is to have fun, and that's in plentiful supply. Blood Dragon condenses all the best bits of Far Cry 3, sprinkles them with cheesy nonsense and blazes its way through to a finale that will leave you grinning like a loon.
  14. May 5, 2013
Blood Dragon its a wonderful homage to the Eighties, and a very good variation of one of the best game of the last year. A true must buy for every thirty-something gamer who loves video games, movies and bad jokes.
  15. 90
With or without Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon deserves the acquisition and justifies the investment, such is the uniqueness of the content.
  16. Apr 30, 2013
Like many of the '80s action flicks it mimics, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has the potential to alienate people with its crass sense of humor and repetitive one-liners. But if you long for an era when smart-mouthed badasses were more concerned with making things go boom than catering to your social sensitivities, Rex Power Colt is your man, and Blood Dragon is your game.
  17. Apr 30, 2013
Still, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is so bad that it's oh-so good. Though it doesn't aim to be the best shooter open-world experience ever, it's thoroughly gratifying—the amazing title screen, the jokes in loading screens, the heavily synthesized soundtrack, the whole damn thing.
  18. Apr 25, 2013
The 80s aesthetic is great and the fun here is guaranteed. If you lived through this particular decade you will definitely appreciate Ubisoft's latest.
  19. May 1, 2013
Blood Dragon perfectly captures the essence of '80s action kitsch, but it's often at odds with the gameplay.
  20. Apr 30, 2013
Blood Dragon came out of nowhere and blew me away. As a child of the 80s and 90s, it was a wonderful blast through the past that I couldn’t stop playing. My only major complaint is the brevity of the package, but if you’re the kind of person who always goes for 100% completion, there’s more than enough game here for you to enjoy.
  21. 70
Blood Dragon succeeds because of its unhinged insanity and thoroughly executed style. Scratch those things away, and you’re left with a shooter that’s only slightly above average.
  22. May 7, 2013
If your eyes can take the color scheme, you're in for a top-tier shooter at a downloadable game price.

It's a meaty, gratifying dose of excess that refuses to pander to subtlety. [Issue#136, p.108]
  25. May 1, 2013
This lightweight canapé with a taste of the 80s B action movies aesthetics will keep you busy, laughing.
  26. Apr 30, 2013
You don't have to love the decade of Rubik's Cubes and Pac-Man Fever to get a kick out of Blood Dragon. But if you do, then all the better: this action-packed shooter will strike all the right synth-pop power chords.
  27. Apr 30, 2013
Minor criticisms aside, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon does a fantastic job of servicing the demand for retro nostalgia, but inside the comfortable setting of a very modern, very well-made shooter. It’s the best of both worlds: it looks like a fun retro game, but plays like a properly modern one. What it lacks in genuinely new features it more than makes up for in pure style, and although it controls in exactly the same way as Far Cry 3 the setting makes the action feel fresh.
  28. May 7, 2013
Bawdy and beautiful, Blood Dragon is that mocking love letter that lets you live out selfish, stupid, guilty pleasures and this time with production values.
  29. Apr 30, 2013
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, expansion or no, is the game Duke Nukem Forever should’ve been – all ridiculous lines, over-the-top moments, glorious cheese all the way, with plenty of moments where you feel like the greatest bad-ass in the world.
  30. Apr 30, 2013
It doesn’t make a lot of significant changes to Far Cry 3, outside of streamlining some of the light RPG concepts in favor of something even more action-oriented. And it does a really great job of capturing that kitschy, hyper-stylized wave of 80’s nostalgia that few manage to get outside of the recent Hotline Miami.
  31. Apr 30, 2013
In Blood Dragon the risk-taking, while welcome, is arguably in the wrong place. After 60 minutes' play, the joke wears away to near invisibility, and all that's left are the familiar systems that underpin the game. These remain enjoyable and, after the slow start, most players will be compelled to push through to the end. But there's an undeniable thinness here, the sense of a mild joke that's been eked out for too long, that can't fully wrap around the heft of the underlying game onto which it's been grafted.
  32. Apr 30, 2013
It’s a shame the experience is so brief, but because this is an arcade title that only costs fifteen bucks to scoop up, it’s a nice amount of depth and a completely absurd amount of fun. It’s just funny that this may turn out to be one of the better things released this year and it started out as a joke.
  33. Apr 30, 2013
This comical, explosive shooter takes everything that makes Far Cry 3's gunplay great and dresses it in the kind of wit and over-the-top fun that Duke Nukem Forever is so desperately missing.
  34. May 13, 2013
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is easily one of the best parody games to date with its retro graphics linked to 21st century gaming.
  35. Apr 30, 2013
Parody's a thorny thing, tricky to execute and often limited in appeal. It's to Ubisoft Montreal's credit that Blood Dragon broadens the appeal of its source, thanks to a hilarious, accessible dollop of nostalgia, coated in the mechanics that made Far Cry 3 great. This easily could've been a great idea greenlit into something terrible. We do love it when a plan comes together.
  36. May 3, 2013
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's campaign is too short and lacks challenge, but it makes up for those shortcomings with an over-the-top production, hilarious characters and dialogue, and enough fun to leave you asking for more.
  37. Apr 30, 2013
It’s great value for money, as a sort of mini-Far Cry 3, but those that have played the original are likely to find it a rather weak sauce substitute and those that haven’t may just wonder what all the fuss was about.
  38. Apr 30, 2013
A surprising game that adds to the already solid FC3 gameplay a layer of exhilarating 80s culture parody with great jokes and over-the-top action. It deserves to be followed by a full-fledged, triple-A sequel: Rex Colt has got the potential to be the real, modern heir to Duke Nukem.
  39. Apr 30, 2013
Blood Dragon shows what’s possible with a bit of creativity and imagination, taking Far Cry 3 fundamentals and twisting them into a glorious love letter to 80s action movies.
  40. 70
Blood Dragon becomes too easy too soon, thanks in part to the steady stream of health-bar upgrades and damage-reduction bonuses you’ll unlock as you tear through 30 experience-based levels of personal progression. By the end you’re practically unstoppable, so you’ll almost certainly overcome all seven story missions, and complete every optional hunting excursion and hostage rescue, in under five hours.
  41. 70
That Ubisoft saw fit to make a shooter for laughs is enormously commendable, and a step that we hope others will follow. But its commitment to dumbing down means that this is a pure-bred B-game rather than all-star A-lister.
  42. lood Dragon is silly-fun. It’s the video-game equivalent of spilling all of your toys out in the sandbox and making a story up as you go along with He-Man and Optimus Prime teaming up to fight Cobra Commander...Nothing really makes sense, but it doesn’t make sense in just exactly the right way.
  43. May 6, 2013
Even as simply a pure action game, Blood Dragon would be worth a look, but for those who appreciate the retro futuristic style that it bathes in, it's an absolute treat.
  44. Who the hell at Ubisoft gave Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon the go-ahead? And more importantly, how can I shake his or her hand? It’s one of the most unique releases of the year: a brilliant homage to the games and movies of the 1980s, yet it’s also a biting mockery of them.
  45. May 8, 2013
The feeling is that Blood Dragon is a straight-to-VHS sequel that occasionally manages to top its blockbuster equivalent due in large part to a sharp wit and an enthusiastic execution on a popular nostalgia.
  46. Apr 30, 2013
It’s bizarre and funny and quite unlike anything that’s been done before by a major video game studio. And for the most part, it works.
  47. Apr 30, 2013
Even though it looks like a random, crazy game, it's actually a pretty solid offer that players who just want to have fun will enjoy. Anyway, just the fact of Ubisoft has released such a wild concept gives us some hope for a future where big companies take risks with their games.
  48. Apr 30, 2013
It's slightly disappointing, but I found myself returning to Blood Dragon after I'd finished it. The compulsive appeal of the parent game carries over, and it's nice to play a sci-fi shooter that's not trying to tell a so-called 'epic' story. Here you shoot people, a lot, and for most of its short running time that's good fun.
  49. Apr 30, 2013
It'll have you laughing one minute, saying, "WTF?!?" the next, and topping it off with a, "Holy sh*t!" It's awesomesauce in a digital package, and it's sure to appeal to anyone who isn't named Jack Thompson. What more could you want for a mere 1,200 MSP ($15 USD)?

Wholly entertaining, Blood Dragon chucks everything we didn't like about Far Cry 3 in the bin and cranks everything else we did like up to 11. Then adds lasers. Solid. [Issue #98, p.72]
  51. Apr 30, 2013
The game’s writing is one of the big highlights. The tutorial sections are hilarious, as is the dialog between characters. Rex is constantly spouting insanely cheesy dialog, and it all works really well.
