A great example of how to make a quality HD remake. Even if adapting the gameplay to modern tastes, Vector Cell managed to keep the original spirit untouched: even if you didn't play Delphine Software's original game, every lover of sci-fi action games would be pleased with it.
It's difficult to evaluate the remake of Flashback: old fans will gather in front of a title that remembers the original, but had lost that unique style. Who will approach the game for the first time will find instead a well made title but not so addictive.
Being a big fan of the original MD/Genesis version, I got this day one. I really liked it. Played through it in one day, IIRC. I kind of forgot about it and found it again today, played it again, didn't expect much and have to say: This is great. I honestly think this is a very, very well done homage to the old one. It still kind of plays the same, but with much needed updates in control and graphic departments and a bit more story content. Some of the dialogue is a bit ...wacky, which takes away from the darker Blade Runner-like tone of the original. But the scenery, the graphics, the atmosphere is very, very well preserved. Enhanced, even. I would have betted, that Flashback was one of those games that wouldn't work well in 2.5D, but... it does. Very well. I don't get any of the negative reviews. I get the mixed ones. But it definitely controls well, it definitely looks good (even today) and it oozes the old Flashback atmosphere. I guess those who don't like this wouldn't have liked Flashback to begin with.
I recommend this.
Waiting a long long time for a suite or a remake. Very happy when it was done The game had answered all my expectations! Very excellent game and nice story
The problem with Flashback is that despite having faults that can be overlooked, the remaining execution feels flat and average. There is absolutely nothing special about Flashback. And that in itself is one of the worst sins that a game can commit.
It doesn't really work as a remake, but it doesn't work as an action platformer either. A quite simple experience where there's very little to highlight.
While nostalgic, Flashback doesn’t necessarily pay tribute to its predecessor. Superfluous content mixed with poor level design and frustrating bugs should be enough to keep you from playing this more than once, no matter how much you loved the original.
Flashback was never an arcade game, so I have no idea why this is featured. It's a shame that such a revered classic has received such a soulless re-imagining, especially considering the people involved. It's never awful, but its lack of personality is almost worse than being all-out dire.
The story and setting are fun, but after 10 minutes of wrestling with wonky controls, the nostalgia wore off. A little later, after Conrad’s body somehow fused with a platform and forced me to restart, the contempt began.
I loved this game when I was young, I love this game today. I recognize the levels, Conrad, the ambiance, everything. The game was made for the casual gamers AND the hardcore gamers, because playing in easy mode with all assistance options is very easy and playing in hard mode with no assistance options is very very very hard And the old game is there, it's awesome, we can even play the level we want in case of the original is too difficult for us in current days.
This remake is a much improved version of the original. While it does seem to suffer from screen tear (I have a 5600XT i5-12700k 64GB) it isn't that bad except when the cutscenes are playing. There are maps as well telling you where you need to go.
I went back to the original Genesis version and I know some people might get offended, the game was slow as molasses. I played it for about 10 minutes before turning it off in frustration.
Congratulations, you have managed to create a remake **** made decades ago and did a worst job in the animations, amazing!!!
It looks great but gameplay, controls and animation is far worse than the original.
Couldn't drag myself to finish the game.
Such a shame tho 'cause the game clearly looks like it had a good idea going on... but DEM CONTROLS.
Buggy and unresponsive as f*** (the physics are pathetic too), and if you combine that with the fact that the game itself is actually kinda challenging the results are a million cheap deaths in the million mediocre action sequences you will find.
What a pity, the game could have been a thousand times better but IMO it got destroyed by the controls and physics. Also the main character's voice and overall charisma is ridiculously dumb.
