Omega Five Image
  • Summary: [Xbox Live Arcade] Omega Five is a true next-gen, high-definition shooter, with the most awe-inspiring graphics around. Grab an extra controller, choose your merc, and engage in two-player local co-op play for more action. If you're a hardcore player, try your hand at the ultra-challenging ++ Mode, where you're only allowed one hit! Local co-op: Grab an extra controller and demolish enemies with a friend by your side. Dangerous environments: Enemies come at you from all sides, even from the background. Merc variety: Fight as Ruby, Tempest, or other characters, each of whom has three unique main weapons and special attacks. Unlockable extras: Discover new characters, game modes, and options. 1. If this review was written in 1995 then we'd probably have filled six pages with screenshots to point out every touch of genius that makes this one of the best shooters we've ever played. We don't have that luxury, but the sentiment remains the same. [Mar 2008, p.134]
  2. The game is pretty and nice to look at, but ultimately shallow (I added that part) and while a distraction for a week or so, the game is too short and not deep enough to qualify for obsessiveness to get on the Live leaderboard.

Omega Five isn't anything special -- a blessing in some respects, but ultimately its curse. It's a side-scrolling shooter, highly reminiscent of the 16-bit era (even the music is in line with the best shooters of the late '90s), and while it's a short game on the whole, its challenge is nearly insurmountable and definitely not for the mass market.

A fun game for just $10 (800 MSpoints). Great graphics and controls.

Maybe, just maybe, someday a scrolling shooter developer will wake up and realize that by including only one ridiculously high level of difficulty they're effectively excluding anyone and everyone who doesn't possess the twitch reflexes of an 11-year-old. When that day comes, the other 99.99% of the population might actually enjoy a game like this. Amusingly, the developer of Omega Five predicted my score - it's a 5 all the way - as in, 5 minutes of utter frustration followed by the 5 seconds it took to delete this massive disappointment from my 360's hard drive. Good riddance. Expand
