Since this isn't your usual Sam Stone outing and not even your usual platform shooter, it may seem like a risk at first, but once you play it, you'll be hooked on Serious Sam DD XXL. At 800MSP… this is one of those games that just, feels right.

Double D was one of 2012's most pleasant surprises, a budget-priced promotional title that managed the unthinkable and outdid the game it was designed to get people excited about. Normally I'd be in favour of leaving well enough alone, but Mommy's Best Games has taken everything that worked about Double D and built something even more spectacular on top of it.

DD XXL is more than an expansion; it’s a downloadable title that delivers its worth ten times over.

The 2D-action is crazy, there are lots of secrets to be discovered and Sam's humour is back to its old glory.

The Gunstacker system offers an impressive variety of ways to throw bits of metal around at incredible speeds, and the enemy and level designs are (mostly) as creative as you’re going to see this year. It’s not too big on plot, but you’ll probably be too busy using ridiculous guns to mow down waves of grotesque enemies to care.

In the end, it's best to think of Serious Sam Double D XXL as a "director's cut" of the original game. It's not perfect, but it is a noticeable upgrade from what we saw on the PC in 2011.

A crazy and entertaining love letter to Contra. [May 2013, p.77]

Serious Sam Double D XXL is perfectly suited as a fun 2D arcade game in which you have to kill countless crazy and over the top enemies. It's a Serious Sam game the fan will recognize in a heartbeat. The plot is almost non-existent, however, and there are some serious framerate drops in the coöperative mode. For a simple, explosive shoot 'em up, you will a lot of guilty pleasure in Double D XXL, though.

Ballsy cartoon guts and supersploding stupidity. [March 2013, p.89]

I loved my time with Serious Sam Double D XXL, but it certainly isn’t going to set the world on fire. From someone who has serious fatigue for the series, XXL was a fresh twist on a familiar idea. Anyone who enjoys the series should check it out. Just don’t go into it expecting revolution and you will be fine. Serious Sam has a specific audience and XXL caters to that. Now just get rid of Huff and bring on the sequel.

The over-the-top carnage is rounded out with co-op play (starring new redneck pal Huff), vehicle stages, new levels not in the PC version, and an inexhaustible supply of sticky high-jump pads — though it’s held back by rough visuals, co-op lag, and an overall lack of polish.

This is a bombastic, flippant, amusingly grotesque game that compensates for a lack of wit with hyperactive energy and overstatement.

Serious Sam Double D XXL really is a 2D Serious Sam. The stackable weapons are nice; however, the gameplay and the jokes are a little bit too moronic. The multiplayer is ok, for some hours, but after playing a while, the game gets boring.

It’s fun for a few hours, in which chaotic gunfights, funny weapons and a couple creative moments manage to get your attention. However, the game is too shallow to keep your attention for long. Just like its big brother Serious Sam Double D XXL is corny, simple fun, but never anything more.

It’s nice that some games test your intellectual capacity or submerge you in a deep narrative, but games like Serious Sam Double D XXL are the necessary counterbalance. A game that simply offers entertainment that requires zero intellect to enjoy. A nice snack.

Crazy and weird don't necessarily add up to fun.

It is a decent amount of unbridled chaos with some absurd enemy design and a solid weapon mechanic. While not the most innovative or engaging title, it is likely to provide enough entertainment for Serious Sam fans to be worth looking into.

Consistency seems to be what prevents Serious Sam Double D XXL elevating from a good game to a great game.

An odd beast, one which seems unsure whether it’s trying to be a genuine throwback, or ironically retro; the graphics and gameplay indicate the former, but its difficulty level and tone suggest the latter.

Dishes out more of the colourful carnage the original was well received for and stuffs plenty of additional content into this gun pie. One ingredient missing, however, is innovation.

The epitome of “shut your brain off and shoot” gaming. In fact you might as well take your brain right out of your head and throw it down a set of stairs because nothing here will test your intelligence.

A serious lack of fun and no desire to break free of its own monotony are reasons enough to avoid the game altogether. Spend your money on something else.

How can anything this slow, ugly and glitchy be so slow and have such huge problems with the frame rate? Our guess would be that the Xbox 360 pukes while running this piece of pure garbage that isn't in any way worth a second of your time.

Serious Sam Double D XXL is a mockery of games in general and to Serious Sam especially. The first games are really entertaining, so I'm afraid that this can be the death blow to my dear old Sam.
