This is a gift for Sonic fans. It is not only one of the best Sonic games ever made, but also a great port and adaptation, something not that frequent. Its price is also helpful to recommend it. Although the game doesn't have any improvement in graphics, they have aged well.
Sonic CD is a labor of love, and for fans, it is a chance to finally play this often talked-about game. If you enjoy classic Sonic games, this is a must own. The amount of polish that went into it is impressive, especially for the low price tag. Sega may have soiled Sonic's name in previous years, but after Generations and now this, I think he is back on the right track to glory.
Sonic CD's overall package is bare-bones, with the option for the original Japanese music and a time trial mode being the only notable additions to the game, but with the tiny price point (only 400 MS points) it's an easy thing to forgive.
Sonic the Hedgehog has had it rough lately thanks to a number of middling games that have departed from the spirit of the first three games. Sonic CD is best served to those who played the original games back in the day and want a chance to relive the glory days. If you've never played Sonic CD and are a fan, then by all means spend the five bucks to play a game that's wildly different from any other.
Sonic CD is already eightteen years old, but it's still one of the greatest Sonic games. Everything that was good in the 1993 version for SEGA Mega-CD, is still good in the remake. The levels have a beautiful design and the high definition tweak certainly strengthens that. A pity that SEGA didn't add anything to the remake, some bonus content would have been nice.
A fantastic port of a fantastic game! The 2011 remake of Sonic CD, released on Xbox 360, PS3, iOS, Android and PC, is by far the greatest way to play this 1993 classic. This remake boasts full 1080p support, improved physics and controls, an option to switch between the JP/EU and NA soundtracks, (yes, there are two completely-different soundtracks) and so much more!
As for the main game, it's an absolute blast. The levels are well-designed and look nice, the soundtracks, both the JP/EU and NA one, are absolutely brilliant, the animated opening and ending cutscenes are absolutely stunning... I could go on all day. I honestly can't recommend this game any more, it's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Go buy it! It's super inexpensive, as well.
As one of the only games worth playing on the notoriously awful Sega Mega CD, Sonic CD is a solid platformer, but a deeply flawed one. For every pro this game has, like the time travel gimmick, the inclusion of Metal Sonic and phenomenal music, the level design is among the worst in the 2D line-up. The levels are huge and while monotony isn't present, the game just feels unfocused in many instances, especially in levels like Metalic Madness or quartz quadrant, and the bosses are among the worst in the series, while Metal Sonic is more of a set piece than an actual boss battle. In general, the game feels like a different variation of Sonic 1, from the sprite to mobility, with inclusions like the butchered spindash and peel-out at least giving the game its own identity. It's a good game, but just a flawed one.
I cannot see why everyone likes this game so much. It has awful level design with an overuse of gimmicks and springs, terrible bosses that are way too easy, and an awful 100% system that makes the awful levels even worse. The only redeeming quality of this game is top notch presentation and music. If it weren't for the presentation, this would probably be the worst Sonic game.
