You, as El Presidente, will first take control of the infamous island of Tropico during early colonial times and then guide it through the centuries as the world changes and moves ever forward. You must tackle the changing needs of your people, as well as opposing governments and factions, and thus lay the foundations for your own dynasty. As you move through your years in office you can promote members of your extended family on the island to positions of power: such as ambassador, commanding general or even Supreme Ruler, to ensure your legacy thrives through the eras. As your influence and wealth grows, so do the threats to your burgeoning island superpower. Can you survive both World Wars, prosper through the Great Depression, rule as an iron-fisted dictator through the Cold War and advance your country to modern times and beyond? From the 19th to the 21st century, each era carries its own challenges and opportunities. As well as a wealth of other new features, including advanced trading mechanics, technology, scientific research trees and island exploration, Tropico 5 adds cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players for the first time in the series' history. That said, with the plethora of other options ranging from churches to space programs, controlling an island nation bent on exorcizing its previous demons (existing under the Crown of an imperialist ruler) and taking sole command of an army and a civilization, Tropico 5 is a fulfilling experience.
  2. Like sipping a mojito while resting your panda-skin boots on a pauper, there's something nasty yet refreshing here, as it pushes you to maintain control in marvelously illiberal ways. [Feb 2015 (US), p.72]

There's something infectious about Tropico 5's breezy attitude to tyranny and dictatorship. [Issue#156, p.118]

This go around, Tropico 5 continues to have some annoying problems that need to be addressed. The controls are disappointing, the story mode is awful, and some other nagging issues persist.

A screen dominated by menus as opposed to seeing what is actually occurring on the ground and music that needs to be switched to mute as an extreme priority being a few. That having been said, the game has plenty of new features and longevity over previous games, if perhaps not offering anything especially new. A welcome change from the console standard FPS. Expand

Still a fun builder with plenty to do but not I believe this game falls very short in some areas. very little customization options for your leader and I expected a lot more additions that were simply not there. I still think the leap to xboxone is something to look forward too still a fun game to pass the time and is still interesting. The reason I gave it a 6 is because it simply did not deliver many additions and it just doesn't feel like a full game from tropico 4. Expand

So they made it look prettier and added a couple of new things, whoopdeedo! HOW ABOUT FIXING THE PROBLEMS THAT HAVE PLAGUED THIS GAME SINCESo they made it look prettier and added a couple of new things, whoopdeedo! HOW ABOUT FIXING THE PROBLEMS THAT HAVE PLAGUED THIS GAME SINCE THE BEGINNING!!! Citizens still refuse to work no matter the job quality or pay STILL. Stop adding things to the game and fix the problems already. Thanks for wasting my money. And to the rest of the critics, just quit, you have no clue. To give this game such high ratings when they refuse to fix the flaws even after 5 games and countless complaints. Expand
