  1. The graphics are sound and the audio is decent, but the gameplay is just not enough to make this a great game. There is poor movement, it’s a poor attack engine, and there were just too many holes in the gameplay.

While the game features stunning graphics, clear and realistic sound, and RPG elements to heighten the games longevity, there are some major set backs with the control, the A.I., the battling, and others areas.
  3. Chances are a good number won't be able to forgive the incredibly high level of difficulty--or, rather, be forgiven by it, especially considering the inability to save in the middle of the game's long levels.
  4. Those with the patience and interest in developing the skills required to play it and finish it will love Enclave. Those looking for a casual, short session won't be able to return this one fast enough.
  5. There's a good deal on the surface to enjoy... When you get past the surface, the random mash of melee and the forced repetition of the levels chillingly weaken Enclave from the inside out.

Beneath Enclave's pixel-shaded graphics, we find only a trace of a game worth playing. [Fall 2002, p.117]

The biggest problem is that (with very, very rare exceptions) you can only save at the end of a level...Imagine "Halo" without a recharging shield or checkpoints, and you'll start to get the idea. [Sept 2002, p.94]

Probably the hugest no-no will be the lack of in game saving and will really frustrate 99% of the gaming public. Honestly, the game was so close to becoming a huge hit that it really depressed me.

Gamers who may be looking for a deep adventure should consider Enclave. While there are a few graphical elements in the game that could've used a little more studio time, there are just as many gameplay elements that enhance the game.
  10. A few more months in development ironing out the control system and the suspect AI would have seen a much better release, whilst mid-level saves would have eliminated some of the frustration.
  11. If "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" were stripped of its depth, its open-ended gameplay, its plethora of quests and overarching story, and its hardcore role-playing game mystique, Enclave would be the result, an often entertaining but equally often frustrating game.
  12. The controls are mediocre, the graphics are amazing, and the gameplay is sub par, yet another occasion where graphics DO NOT make a game great.
  13. The biggest and what will probably be the final deathblow to this game for a lot of people is the overall difficulty.
  14. If you like the combat, you'll be satisfied with Enclave. If you're not, you won't find much else to take an interest in.
  15. The trouble with Enclave is the camera system. It seems geared toward exploration, one-on-one combat and not mass combat, therefore allowing even a group of lowly enemies to inflict significant damage from 'cheap' shots.

It almost seems the developers spent too much time crafting Enclave's wicked-looking environments, then skimped on the actual game, which needs better puzzles and more compelling character development. [Sept 2002, p.152]
  17. 70
With such awesome visuals, it's hard to comprehend why the clipping problems are so horrendous.
  18. 60
A well-made, well-presented, potentially thoroughly enjoyable hack-n-slash-a-thon that’s plagued by a Frustrating Cheap Death spell and the lack of any mid-game save or checkpoint feature to combat it.
  19. Enclave has so much promise that it's a shame it's crippled by one key design flaw. While the occassional checkpoint exists just before the battles with big boss characters, they are so rare that you may very well never see one.
  20. 60
The lack of multiplayer action combined with the rather unrefined combat, annoying save game functionality (or lack thereof), and frustrating jumping problems all take their toll on the overall play value.
  21. One of the more pleasant surprises on the Xbox, but players must be prepared to steel themselves against some trying play mechanics.
  22. 50
So, when you have great graphics, decent audio, okay gameplay but a horrible 3rd person control scheme with jump on right thumbstick and a horrible camera system what do you get? You get an average game that never fully delivers.
  23. The action is solid enough and there's plenty of challenge to keep you busy for a while, but key features of the game were scrapped entirely, and what's present at all is still buggy and unfinished.

The combat in this game was fun and the rewards for exploration and clearing levels appropriately were well worth the effort. It must be said, however, that this game can be simultaneously punishing and unforgiving...if you die, you start over, and you will die a lot! However, the accomplishment you feel for pushing through yet another level stands a bit taller than most other games, with completing the game (minus cheats, of course) standing high on my list. Definitely worth a look from the bargain bin! Full Review »

Way way way too hard and no save points made it very frustrating.

Great game!!! very underated and quite fun after playing it for about 2 hours.... u get into it with all the gold and new equipment unlocked. graphics good, gameplay, okay... the bow is hard to shoot and the sword swings are weird and slow. reminds me of LOTR a bit, good variety, kight, bow person, magician... basic and easy to get into. i got it for $10 used. :D just like goin to a movie, but better. also check out Ninja Gaiden if youre looking for good sword swinging gameplay!!!
