Addictively fun as a multiplayer game, and tricked-out with enough new modes and Franchise options to make the single player experience enjoyable, Hitz Pro delivers on its promise.
  2. An excellent blend of the two styles of play and has enough options, on either side, to appeal to hockey fans of any sensibility. Above all else, the game is just a lot of fun.
  3. The lack of online play on this console is disappointing, but this is still a terrific title. Midway has crafted a game that is a delight to play and to watch. Option rich, graphically wonderful and with a great audio track, this is a title video hockey fans should own.
  4. Captures the excitement of hockey in such a way that it will appeal to newbies while acting as a refreshing change for fanatics that are hung up on some of the sims out there.
  5. I'd say that if you can't have a good time with this title, than you need to pull that puck out of your butt and allow yourself to sit down and relax a little. [Oct 2003, p.138]

Ridiculous brawling aside, the game's control is smooth, with a good button layout and a responsive feel.

If "serious" is the last thing you associate with hockey games, you'll have a blast hammering out checks on Hitz’ rink - especially since Midway’s rolled back the price a notch.
  8. It's easy to pick up and play, but there's enough depth and customization here to make this the only alternative to the more simulation-based hockey games available.
  9. While its simulation dreams don’t match competing games, it offers enough of a varied experience to be considered a good, solid combo of the two sports game styles.
  10. Fans of previous NHL Hitz games will still enjoy the easily accessible gameplay and hopefully respect the move into a more serious variation of the sport.
  11. Provides an enjoyable hockey experience that’s easy to pick up and play, graphically sound and aurally interesting just like before. However, this experiment with more realism injected into the series lacks a certain amount of zip that diehard fans have come to know and love.
  12. Hitz is fast. You can barely keep up, making it so arcadey you'll want to shove a quarter in your controller port after each period. [Nov 2003, p.126]
  13. By 'refocusing' the game to concentrate on the more realistic side of the sport, Hitz Pro takes the series down a new path that loses any sense of identity that it might have made for itself. [Dec 2003, p.124]
  14. I truly love this game. It has everything a hockey fan could want. From the improved animations to the great Franchise mode to the great Pick Up and Play mode, NHL Hitz Pro is a necessary purchase. [Oct 2003, p.84]
  15. Most hockey games serve up similarly snazzy visuals, tight control, and expansive options, but none of 'em focus on purely wild-and-fun gameplay like this. [Oct 2003, p.136]
  16. The franchise may not be as wacky as before, nor as realistic as the competition, but it hits hard, doesn't let up, and is great entertainment for a group of friends looking for something less simmy and more instantly accessible.
  17. The easiest hockey game for your normal gameplayer to pick up and have fun with, even those who know nothing about hockey.
  18. Overall, this is a decent, efficient addition to the genre, with a few good additions here and there for hardcore fans while the game's accessibility makes it a fine starting point for newcomers.
  19. A sweet package - great audio/visuals and tremendous game play.
  20. And it's backed up by authentic sound effects, some decent music, and the vocal stylings once again of veteran commentator Tim Kitzrow.
  21. Harder-hitting than the rest. [Oct 2003, p.67]
  22. Hopefully Midway decides to stick with the arcade style they are known for in the future and not drift away from the hardcore extreme style of their games.
  23. Midway's given the game a facelift and polish to great effect, replacing the overbearing amounts of flash and glitter with solid gameplay. [Oct/Nov 2003, p.99]

I've played EA hockey from 97 to 2004, this is easily the most fun hockey game I've played...

Well Hitz has always been a good game, but I think it got a little worse this year. The arcade gameplay blended with simulation simply Well Hitz has always been a good game, but I think it got a little worse this year. The arcade gameplay blended with simulation simply isn't what I wanted. Hitz 03 is a better game, and somehow has better graphics. How did that happen? Hitz Pro is fun, but the direction they're taking just isn't well thought out I don't think. Full Review »
