  • Summary: This bold debut film by author Stephen Elliott, a visual love letter to San Francisco, is the story of high school student Angelica (a mesmerizing Ashley Hinshaw), whose choices lead her from a depressing home life and dead-end job in Los Angeles to the fetish-filled Bay Area adult film world. A stepfather with dark motives lurks in the background, as Angelica watches over her younger sister and questions her options. In memorable supporting roles are Festival favorite Lili Taylor as Angelica’s manic and opportunistic mother, Jonny Weston as her sexy but sleazy boyfriend and Dev Patel as best friend and much-needed nonsexual support. The vibrant cast also includes James Franco as a coke-addicted attorney who spots Angelica in a strip club, and Heather Graham as a female porn director who launches “Cherry’s” adult film career with mixed feelings. A gritty and defiantly voyeuristic look at the life of a youth who never loses her innocence, even as she gyrates for the camera, Cherry captures a rare point of view, urging us to consider the delicate tension between body and self by focusing on society’s most sought after objects of desire.     Where About Cherry fails is in its depiction of interpersonal relationships. Nearly all of them are flat and uninspired.

    Demanding everyone accept you as you are can be a way of refusing to compromise, and the film's failure to explore this aspect of the lifestyle its portraying is almost as disappointing as moralizing would be.

    James Franco's role hardly exists. He's a doped-up cipher who attends museum openings and drives his car into a cement wall, looking as bored and out of place as he did hosting the Academy Awards.

    Prostitutes have inspired some of the most unforgettable characters in fiction. As for all of its effect on Angelina, she might as well have saved herself the wear and tear and stayed in the laundry.

    When it comes for real addicted movies, I think this movie wins every award and heart. About Cherry isn't bad. It's actually a movie for every drama film lover.… Expand

    Is it possible to make a movie with a gorgeous girl, an alcoholic mom, innocent younger sister, a threateningly lecherous step-dad, a bad boy boyfriend, a coke addicted lawyer, and an ambiguous female porn director, all shot against artistically seedy backdrops and featuring the SF sex film industry....BORING? Apparently so - The movie dragged and stalled, the characters often seemed oddly disconnected from the events around them and the moments of fine acting that might otherwise have made true impact were swallowed up in the overall void that seemed to suck the connection and reality out of the rest of the film. One positive, Dev Patel amazingly seemed to be able to raise his role out of the vacuum enough to create a charming and believable character in spite of the odd vacancy surrounding him.… Collapse

    Great cast, crappy script, horrid production. I was waiting for the story to evolve - it never did! There was no story. About Cherry is really about nothing! There was no emotion, no care, no conflict that had any meaning. The movie was completely pointless. I didn't care for any of the characters. Their develoment was stale.
