Tyler Perry never wants to scare you, and I assure you, he never will. Perry DOES want to make you laugh though, succeeding when jokes are bite-size and contained – but most scenes ramble on and on as Madea searches for multiple ways to land the same punchline.
This halloween i got a treat a good laugh from our ol pal madeia and friends i absolutly loved the time i spent with madeia and the gang ignore every negative reviews and go see it for yourself its hilarious and a haunting good time i laughed nonstop mr perry is a clear master of comedy uncle joe madeia and her friends steal the show loved it
In its final moments, Boo! A Madea Halloween delivers a moral with after-school-special levels of subtlety. A jolting switch from oft-mean-spirited humor to a message movie, this comedy is unlikely to win over any new fans, but the devoted will find comfort in the familiarity.
At 103 minutes, this film has way too much dead weight. Scenes are repeated over and over, and some of the acting would not cut it in a school play. But in the rare moments when Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween is firing on all cylinders, it displays a cleverness which hints that, with more time and a few more iterations of the script, this might have been a good movie.
The film is chockablock with terrible actors (including Tyga, in a bizarro cameo rapping at a frat party), and the jokes he gives his inferior cast to work with are stinkers.
While the latest Madea movie apparently still has the production quality of a made for TV film, Tyler Perry's focus on comedy and a lighthearted message make for one of his better works. There are plenty of laughs (provided you enjoy the Madea brand of humor) and even a little heart. It also helps that the movie makes good use of the holiday in question.
This one is primarily all about the laughs and that's a good thing. A lot of the previous Madea movies, particularly the early ones, have been bogged down by heavy-handed drama that sometimes dealt with dark themes like spousal abuse and even ****. The problem was that those topics felt at odds with everything else going on in the movie. Perry just isn't the best at handling serious drama. Don't believe me? Just look at his movie "Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor." Actually, don't look at it. It's awful.
However, when it comes to humor Tyler Perry is actually pretty good. That's why it's been so refreshing to see more recent Madea films like Madea's Witness Protection and A Madea Christmas take on more lighthearted tones and focus on the laughs. Boo! is probably the most lighthearted yet. There's still some morals running in the back, but it's handled as lightly as possible so that the sweet parts are pushed to the front and the more uncomfortable ones are cut out completely. So the question remains, is Boo! funny? Yes, in face it is. Maybe even much more so than you would expect. The jokes come about a mile a minute. The majority of them hit their mark even if the movie has a tendency to rely on characters just saying the same thing repeatedly with in their characters weird voices. For those who watch Madea movies as a family, I think it's worth mentioning this is probably the crudest Madea I've seen thus far. I'll admit that I've only watched a few of these movies and it's been a while since I have. However, I don't remember them having this much profanity at this level. Not as many innuendos either. Safe to say, it earns and maybe even pushes it's PG-13 rating in a few areas. At least in this reviewer's opinion.
It's a very funny movie that plays to Tyler Perry's strengths (jokes and character work) and ditches his weaknesses (drama, especially the serious kind). The result is easily one of Tyler Perry's best works so far. It's a guaranteed hit for fans and maybe even a solid way to pull in newcomers who are unfamiliar with the character, but are looking for some Halloween themed laughs. I, for one, really enjoyed myself.
Look, is it good? No. But I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy myself for most of the runtime. It's lazy and stupid and horribly paced, but my friend and I saw this right after JACK REACHER and sitting in a crowded theater with a game crowd made for the most fun we had that night. If that's all you want, then I say go to a crowded theater or watch it next Halloween on DVD with some drinks and some friends. If you want intelligent entertainment... I mean obviously look elsewhere, this is a Madea movie after all...
It wasn't the worst ever, but not close to good. The first half was terrible, I wanted to turn it off at points. The second half was pretty good, but the last 10 minutes were great. The story needed a lot of improvement. They had plot holes, bad jokes, and it was a little confusing. It isn't worth a watch.
Oh my god. This film is just another madea "comedy" full of crap film. Did I laugh? No. Did I enjoy this? NO! I almost hated halloween after watching this.
I am a huge Madea fan and have enjoyed her movies (and even her stage shows) throughout the years. However, this feature was a huge disappointment. While the premise probably sounded good on paper (Madea kicks ass at a Halloween fraternity party!!!), the cinematic realization wasn't so good. With some weariness, I have grown accustomed to the religiosity in Tyler Perry films, but to dampen the fun and frivolity of Halloween with religious speeches and talk of "the Devil's night"....really? Is this a comedy or a Kirk Cameron sermon-piece? Also the movie is just minimally funny. I think you have to be a die-hard Madea fan to think it is more than that. The gags are set up miles in advance and are repeated over and over. There is truly no original joke in the entire film. Old people's bodily functions are not my idea **** time on Halloween. And shall we discuss the acting? Look, no one goes to a Madea movie to see Oscar-worthy performances, but the actors should be above the standard of a community theater novice improvisation group. No offense to community theater novice improvisation groups. It is just plain terrible. I strongly suggest you wait and watch it online or on On Demand. To paraphrase a line in the movie, don't you be the one to get tricked.
