  • Starring: Bill Pullman, Marcia Cross, Milla Jovovich, Spencer List
  • Summary: In an effort to escape her murky past and build a better future, Olive , a nomadic European con-artist, and her 10-year-old American-born son, Bobby, find themselves living in Oklahoma. As her top priority, Olive seeks to give Bobby the things she never had: she enrolls him in school, makes him do his homework and tries her hardest to be a good mother, and with the help of an old friend from Oklahoma, Walt, Olive "provides" for Bobby in the only way she knows how. But despite of her efforts (or perhaps because of them) Bobby displays troubling behavior both at his school and in their conservative neighborhood. Things take a turn for the worse after Bobby's unfortunate "run-in" with the local and wealthy businessman Kent (Bill Pullman), and Olive's criminal past finally catches up with her, forcing her to make the toughest judgment of all. Sensitively acted, carefully written and directed with heartfelt compassion, Bringing Up Bobby is an engrossing little independent film made on an austere budget in 22 days.

Bringing Up Bobby centers around a mugging performance by Jovovich, who can't ground the film's attempts to tie together sentiments from "Paper Moon" and "Miss Saigon."

Janssen's affectionate, almost-1970s-style view of innocents-at-large may not be polished, but earns points for being from the heart.

A technically competent but painfully broad dramedy about a larcenous mother-and-son duo in the Midwest. This gender-flipped, latter-day "Paper Moon" lacks that film's judicious restraint, among other things, alternating hick Americana cartoonishness with maudlin appeals to the tear ducts.

  1. All I have to say is Milla Jovovich. She gives an incredible performance which carries the film through the pacing issues. She is an excellent actress and I am proud of her. Oscars here we come Collapse
  2. What a horrible flick. Milla Jovovich throws in an awful performance, the kid is just utterly annoying. Who cares about any of these characters ?
I know this is Famke Janssen's first effort, but please...this movie is unbearable.
