The plot follows Elvis, who didn't really die, just swapped places with an imposter who also happened to be addicted to drugs, and a black JFK who hunt down a mummy at a west Texas nursing home. The plot is, of course, deeper than that, everything with how Elvis got there to why JFK is black is filled with extremely hilarious bits of dialogue and funny moments. Although I am not the biggest fan of sick and stupid humor, I found myself attracted to this film's use of it. The movie is kind of slow, but it is intentional, seeing how everyone is old and in a retirement home. The film also had a message somewhere in the middle of all the jokes, a message of lost identity, but if you missed it it really wouldn't effect your outcome of the film, because this movie is hil-freakin'-larious. The ending battle with the mummy is just great. I highly reccomend this movie to almost everyone. Expand

Along with fellow resident JFK (wonderfully played by the great Ossie Davis), the King is called upon to fight a particularly nasty Mummy who lives by feeding off the souls of the living. Whether you're a horror fan, an Elvis freak, or a fan of the offbeat, this is a hilarious and weirdly poignant effort from auteur Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, The Beastmaster.) Expand

Outrageous plot. Crazy characters. Delicious dialogue. How could you not love this movie? Although it is not very scary (for a horror film, that is), it sure is entertaining. Don't rent it, buy it. You won't be sorry.

Bubba Ho-Tep was one of the slowest movies I've ever seen!! (I saw it instead of Kill Bill....mistake). It had just a tiny slice of that Army of Darkness kind of humor, but it was set in a rest home and felt exactly like one.....

Touching story, original concept artistically executed. Low Budget, but not really looking it. A '10' for proving that money doesn't take it all! Congrats to the Coscarelli and his cast!

Priscilla, Lisa-Marie, his father, and anybody that The King associated with, knew that Sebastian Haff was a replacement, and respected Presley's wishes to be left alone. But after twenty-plus years following Haff's death on a Graceland toilet, you can see on Presley's face that nobody went looking for him. Mum is the word because this conspiracy allowed a lot of people to make money off his death and legacy. What looks like cheap jokes(the growth on "Little Elvis") at Elvis' expense, can be construed as the very real humiliations of a lonely man. Bruce Campbell's dead-on impression of Presley is somewhat wasted by all that Egyptian mummy nonsense, because all that old man-angst could've been used to indict an America for its cold-hearted jokes about his weight and drug use. My feeling is that nobody expected a B-movie actor like Campbell to be this good; so good that he helps transcend a silly cult film-wanna be into respectability, while making you wish they had attempted a serious mounting of this attractive "What if?" scenario. Nevertheless, you can't accuse "Bubba Ho-Tep" of lacking an imagination. Expand

Wonderfully understated, gently bizarre. It isn't at all a "joke" comedy, the humor really hits about 1/2 way through when you suddenly ask yourself what the hell you are seeing.

Things are definitely on the cheesy side. However the humor is actually pretty smart even when the jokes themselves are juvenile. There's a surprising drama element to the film.

For all of it's jokes and mummy madness this is actually a tale about regret. Themes like wondering if you've lived your life to the fullest and moving on from past mistakes run strong here. It gives the film a little bit of heart.

It's an odd combination of ideas and themes that all work well together in the end. The pacing might be a little slow, but with dialog this sharp and a concept this goofy it's hard to not enjoy it all the way through. It's worth watching for Campbell's portrayal of Elvis alone. The humor, heart, and goofy horror are all just bonuses.

I give "Bubba Ho-Tep" a 9.2/10.

In fact, it's weird, wonderful, funny and surprisingly tender. Bubba Ho-tep is the best, and only film about an elderly Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) defending his retirement home from an Egyptian mummy wearing a stetson, with a little help from a black JFK (Ossie Davis). The first half of the film is well-paced, funny and rather deep and emotionally compelling for a film with such a seemingly lowbrow premise. Campbell is absolutely captivating as The King, who swapped lives with an impersonator (who was the one who eventually died on the toilet) to escape the increasingly suffocating attention of his fans. He lives out his twilight years in obscurity, regret and extreme depression in an isolated nursing home in Texas, until something odd begins to happen. The film explores mortality and memory in an unexpectedly intelligent and sensitive way (it's ultimately left to the viewer to decide whether Campbell's character is really Elvis or just some old codger with mental health problems), but at the same time it's not above the odd crude joke and some brilliantly trashy comic horror set pieces. The final few minutes of the film are admittedly a bit of a drag, and are appear to have been put together rather hastily, but you'll hardly care when you've had such a good time throughout. Bubba Ho-tep is a superb, surprisingly clever and heartfelt A-quality B-Movie, with Bruce Campbell's best performance outside his Sam Raimi collaborations. Expand

This movie couldn't be any more B-list horror movie if it tried. The acting is average, the plot is absurd and utterly unbelievable and the effects are average at best. Yet, like anything with Campbell in it, it has a certain charm to it.

As absurd as it might be, this movie is allot of fun and works better as a comedy than as a horror.

Overall:
You go into this movie expecting it to be bad. The name and the premise should be enough of a clue. Yet, low expectations do have a way of making something bad seem good. And in this case, that is exactly what it it. This is a fun enjoyable crap movie (if that makes any sense.)
