The simmering rivalry between Di and Fiamma, inflamed by the kind of glimpsed indiscretion that makes adolescent melodramas tick, explodes in a thriller ending that turns an observant coming-of-age story into something resembling "The Lord of the Flies."

An auspicious debut for Scott, but one whose ingredients are too familiar to really fizz. Green is great, though, in a dark-tinged role that plays to her strengths.

In many ways Cracks is lurid and rickety. But its gripping ensemble performances lend it an emotional intensity that outweighs its shortcomings.

While Scott's movie has a consistent aura, it lacks a consistent tone. What are we to make of the movie, gauzy as a mist-shrouded lake and brutal as "Lord of the Flies?"

  1. This movie turned out to be pretty disturbing at times. Especially the part where Miss G is molesting Fiamma. And where all the girls go skinny dipping. Although, that part is pretty enjoyable at the same time. The film is not as dramatic as I thought it would be. But the acting is nice. Eva Green is pretty good. As well as Juno Temple. My only acting complaint is on the acting of Imogen Poots. Her acting is the weakest and her character's attitude makes it easy for you to hate her. Overall, I enjoyed the film. But, it is a bit too slow and rare for most viewers. Expand
  2. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A moody sensual film exploring passions at a girls boarding school. Ms Green does well with the confused lead character. There is no depth to why she is as she is. The sexual relationship borders on the creepy as the girls figure to be early to mid-teens. The story is predictable so the acting must win out. It almost does, but not quite. It is two films. the first half is spirited, open; the sexual tension on the surface. But I feel what is coming. The letter half becomes dark as the real Miss G comes out. I did not feel empathetic towards her just that she should be locked up before doing harm, but alas too late. The girls perfectly played with just a touch of Lord Of The Flies. C- Expand
