The film is creepy, I'll give it that, but it also has that smalltown, dramatic bend.

Cthulhu isn't awful, but it isn't particularly compelling either.

Cthulhu (kuh-THOO-loo) shows that you can't go home again. Seriously: Don't ever go home -- you'll be sorry.
  4. Reviewed by: John Anderson
The acting is so emotionally unhinged and erratic it borders on camp, diluting any suspense.

Stuart Gordon adapted the story more conventionally in 2001's "Dagon," and it remains the better bet for Lovecraft lovers.
  6. This shambling mess -- offers nothing but a lesson in how not to make a movie.
