The game is on, on the salsa floor.

I had no idea about this film. Just saw its poster and it reminded me 'This Means War'. Sort of like that, but it's not about the spies, instead it was about salsa. An average guy who gave up salsa during his childhood, once again sparked to take it up seriously after finding crush on his new boss who loves salsa. But he's not alone, his colleague who's a bully is on to her and thwarts all his attempts not to get near to her. Now he has to prove, not just to win the love, but his last passion for salsa.

Totally a surprising film. It was not utterly a romance theme, but a music, about salsa. The romance was a small part of it. It was somewhat fun, but I find it a bit dramatic about redefining the passion that was given up a log back. And if you love salsa, you might enjoy it. But it was not like those dance flicks from Hollywood. All the important segments of the story come in the second half. Especially the final act was much better, to end on a high. A film to watch once, just for fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A by the numbers romantic comedy with no surprises and even fewer genuine laughs. The plot is so predictable you can see the ending a mile away, and although there are a few funny moments they aren't nearly often enough. Nick Frosts character is a bit of a loser and you never warm to him, but there are some great supporting performances from Chris O'Dowd and Kayvan Novak. There were also lots of implausible things that bothered me about this film. Why did Kayvan Novak's character take such a huge interest in the Nick Frosts character? Why did Nick Frost not lose any weight by the end of the film - he started off big and ended big - so big you never felt he was never capable of doing any of the dancing. The dance off in the car park was so out of place it was almost like a dream sequence. Didn't expect much from this film and after watching it I have to say my low expectations were not exceeded. When bullies stop him from dancing in the National championships Bruce turns his back on the whole thing and ends up being a very good draftsman for a engineering company. While dealing with that one co-worker that we all have that deserves a punch in the face, played well by Chris O’Dowd. When the new boss comes in and both Bruce and Drew want to fight for her attention it provides most of the humour. This is a date night Romantic Comedy that both sides of the relationship will find a lot to like. It’s almost like a male version of Bridget Jones, but with Salsa dancing. The dance off scene in the car park makes this a more special movie, although there is some help with special effects to make Frost dance better, you still have to give the man props for being able to move as well as he can for that size. As a big guy myself I know I couldn’t dance like that, and not one of you would want that. Don’t be fooled that this is a chick flick, it’s a good comedy that will make you laugh. Collapse
