"Fantastic Four" is not fantastic as it sounds. Its not like "Spiderman" or "Iron Man". Its worse than them. Its terrible with diverse problems; starting from the acting to the visuals, everything is childish and a waste of time. Save yourself and watch something alse.

Fantastic four assembles the worst cast to play superheroes I have ever seen. Boy do they do a bad job of it. It has okay special effects but a cheesey story. I give this movie 23%.

I can understand why this was criticized too much, but to me personally I kinda thought it was decent. It still could've done better though. I do like the cast to the heroes and villain. The action scenes are pretty good, but the sad part is that there was only 2 scenes. Also, this whole movie does is always make pointless catch phrases so it would sound funny. They didn't have to make the whole movie humorous. I was surprised to the performance of Julian McMahon as Dr. Victor von Doom, he was better than I thought. But the thing I really disliked about this movie was the annoyance of Human Torch and complaining of The Thing. The Thing always **** and complained through out the whole friggin' film, I wanted Mr. Fantastic to use his elastic body to cover Things mouth. There was a few flaws with this film, but I still enjoy watching it. It's just not a great superhero alliance film, like X-Men, Watchmen, Kick-Ass, and The Avengers. Expand

I'm a comic book fan. I drank two caffinated sodas and still fell asleep. This movie is a prime example of bloated hollywood fatcats selling out for pretty faces, shallow sex appeal, and mindless special effects over actual artistic expression, acting talent, and imagination. This movie plucks the heart and conviction out of comic book heroism and the mavel universe.

Just plain STUPID. The story and dialogue is dumb, the special effects look cheesy as hell even if they are 'cutting edge,' and Dr. Doom has to be the LAMEST villain ever to grace an action film. He's supposed to look threatening but instead he looks more like a cheap Halloween costume. This movie isn't all bad. Jessica Alba is pretty hot as they milk a dozen or so risque jokes out of her powers (but she doesn't look right as a blonde - stick with your original color) . The Human Torch/missile chase is easily the best action sequence here. Michael Chiklis actually delivers a good performance, far better than this movie deserves - he's so sympathetic as the Thing, even the bad make-up design can't sink his performance. But, that doesn't compensate for the rest of the picture, which stinks. Go rent Spider-Man 1 or 2, or go see Batman Begins if you're at the theater, but I'd wait for this to come out on video and make use of that FAST FORWARD button because you'll only need to see 20, maybe 25 minutes of this. Here I go like a fool to see this movie expecting greatness. That is what i get when i get my hopes to high. This movie was a slap on the face! It is like Marvel decided to punish us for going ga ga over Batman Begins. Who in their right mind would have gotten The diriector of "Taxi" To make something that could have been so much better! But instead, This guy destroys it. When it attempts to add humor it fails by adding annoyance. The action sequences were dull. And The acting is just plain horrible. I am not one to give bad reviews all the time. But my hand was forced to do this because I must warn those who go all drooly over jessica Alba. Stay home! Watch a Dark Angel re run. Dont waste your moola over this flick. If you must go spend happy, see Dark Water This weekend. Or catch War Of the Worlds if you have yet to see it. Or go see Star Wars Episode III for the first time or the 35th time. You have been warned. Expand

This is a very bad movie. It has some of the wost writing ever. It sounds like it was written by eighth graders. "I broke up with you.", "He started it!" Those are actual lines. Nothing makes sense, and the heros spend three quarters of the movie fighting each other. I would give this movie a zero, but it did have some cool effects.

But if your none of the above then all this film is actually a revampt version of Power Rangers. i may buy a copy of it on DVD but even then i recomend that you wait for the january sales and pick it up for a few quid.

It's not as bad as the reviewers have portrayed... IF you're a Fantastic Four Fan like myself, who worships Jack Kirby and the great work he and Stan Lee did in the original comic books. In fact, I thought this was a little better than the Spiderman films (strictly from an original fan-boy's POV.) The good news is, they get The Thing right, and the Human Torch is close to the Lee/Kirby version. Sue Storm and Reed Richards aren't too bad either. The bad news is, they get Doctor Doom all wrong, and ruin what could have been an amazing film treatment of the comic books by destroying his character (best super villain of all time). They even include him in the origin story. There are some great special effects, they include Alicia (Thing's blind GF), and they even refer to Yancey Street... Next time they should consult with some FF fans before they approve the script, though. Expand

You have to take a film like Fantastic Four with a pinch of salt, because it is what it is: an FX-laden, cheesy-line-riddled action-fest. In terms of depth, it's on a par below X-men and Spiderman, swapping multi-dimensional character presentation and believable plights with tighter costumes and firmer buttocks; perhaps a fair trade? The film reflects the powers of its heroes well: it seems hot at first, but soon requires huge stretches of imagination, resulting in a plot that is rocky, and at times invisible. The extent to which The Thing's wife harshly breaks of their marriage based on his new image is ridiculous. Otherwise, the film manages to hold your interest for as long as it lasts, but culminates in a dire conclusion (it hurts to compare the final epic battle of this film and any other super-hero flick, it really does). Just about worth seeing, but everyone will anyway. Expand

The flaming guy was really funny with his one liners and his girlish voice filling up the theater. I didnt like Jessica alba, she was far better in Honey. Everyone in my family enjoyed this movie, even my loveing mentally ill sister Janet. Janet said her favorite part was Chris Evans face, because it was "funny and large". I was Blown after the movie, because it was just soo good, and i really was sad when it ended. This is really a great movie, and it was almost as good as Tim Story's other movies Taxi and Barbershop. If you dont mind spending money on a medicore movie then you should definitly see this, i mean it was really amazing. A great movie? No. Awful? Absolutely not. Attention reviewiers: This movie is NOT Batman! It is NOT dark and gritty! What it is, as it should be, is good fun. Is some of the dialogue campy? Yes. Can Jessica Alba act? Not well enough. Are the characters' personalities pretty true to the comic? All except for Doom. It's fun, the effects are pretty, and there are plenty of moments for those of us who aren't too cool to have a sense of humor. Expand

Though this film is sure, at every turn, to keep actual interpersonal relationships to a minimum and trite dialogue and beyond-cliched plot points to a maximum, all while maintaining a hefty amount of gratuitous skin and cleavage (cue Jessica Alba), it somehow ended up being the most interminable experience I've had in a theatre for a long, long time. Perhaps that is a feat in and of itself? Or maybe we have some of the most flat acting, one-dimensional characters, and complete lack of anything new, exciting, dynamic, or even really animate to thank for this tremendous stinker. Expand

Only if you must, because it's not worth it. Just please, please, please do not give your money to this movie. If you do, all you are saying is that you don't want to see classic comic books be treated with maturity and respect, but would rather have them be butchered, crammed with inane one-liners and "extreme" sports, and then dressed up in shoddy CG. Jeepers...what's all the negativity about? There's nothing wrong with this adaption (outside of a low-key performance of Dr. Doom; these actors shouldn't be afraid to go 'over the top' in their villian portrail). Much has been said in the (mostly negative) reviews of this Marvel superhero epic about the characteristically low-rent 1994 Roger Corman-produced version that almost nobody seems to have actually seen, and the overly uncharitable and cynical among us might therefore ask if that version and this one are really one and the same? From the sets to the special effects to Thing's costume, this definitely has a medium-budget, retro-1960s look and feel: villain Victor Van Doom resembles a live-action Gerry Anderson puppet figure (especially with those eyebrows!); many of the jokes would feel right at home in an early Scooby-Doo episode; and even Jessica Alba's skin-tight suit seems to have been borrowed from Fantastic Voyage's Raquel Welch! All this contributes to the comfy, old-shoe feeling this movie gave me: it may not have any of the grand ambitions of Batman Begins or the Spider-Man films, but it also doesn't patronize the audience the way Ang Lee's unbearable Hulk did...it's just an unptetentious good time. Michael Chiklis (TV's The Commish, The Shield) strikingly communicates the confusion and agony of Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, who by far gets the worst end of the molecular transformation, but Chris Evans as The Human Torch (the only character who genuinely enjoys his accidentally-conferred superpowers and doesn't want to give them up) steals the movie, bringing with him the same blend of swagger and sweetness that helped make 2004's Cellular one of the best B-movies in years. Lots of Nice Little Moments abound, such as Reed Richards' (Ioan Griffudd) flexible response when Alba's Invisible Woman describes the kind of man she's looking for why he ain't it, and a very funny, subtle Burger King product promo. These almost make up for some scriptwriting glitches that are instantly apparent--for example, why are the Four constantlt touted as heroes when their exploits and rescues invariably cause several hundred tons of property damage to everything from skyscrapers to hot dog stands (and in at least one instance, they were the CAUSE of the calamity to begin with? And would one scientist or comics buff please explain to me why Ben's transformation into The Thing necessitates the loss of 20% of his fingers and toes? Expand

Yes i know a very high vote but i have to say its one of the best comic books brought to the big screen. Want critics dont understand is that the characters in this first movie were the main thing the speical effects was not so important because they have just discovered their powers. Yes of course the sequel will probably have more speical effects. Also the critics are forgetting is that it is very true to the comic. If you changed the whole thing like they are more or less saying, then you would come up with not the Fantastic 4 but something else. I dont understand what the critics are finding horrid about this movie? The casting is excellent i mean Ioan Gruffudd looks exactly like Mr. Fantastic. The critics are also saying that Gruffudd was a dull scientist etc. But if they knew anything about the comic then they should understand that Mr Fantastic was exactly like that in the comic! He was always the geeky guy but the extremely sensible one. People are also criticising Jessica Alba as just being there to please the guys. I mean come on she wasnt only there for that. Without Sue Storm the Fantastic 4 would probably kill each other, she's the peace-maker the one that talks sense into mainly The Thing and Human Torch because they dont get along very well. I found this movie very pleasing and i think that the cast and crew of Fantastic 4 should not listen to the critics because they obviously don;t understand what they are talking about. I've also noticed that the movie critics seem to be giving movies like BAtman Begins which is more of a dark movie showing the dark side of things, high marks. While they are giving happy cheery movies that please people with low marks for example fantastic 4!!! Maybe if the critics looked at it in a point of view where they maybe took a look at the comic book then maybe they'll see why all the fans and people who want just a good movie will like Fantastic 4. In my opinion since Fantastic 4 has been getting very low marks by critics but very high marks from normal people who just watched the movie I would say you should probably listen to the normal people becasue they probably understand the movie and are not biased like the critics. I think one of the reasons why so many critics are giving FF negative reviews is because they were expecting something like Batman or X-Men. the problem with that is that the Fantastic Four is nothing like them. their stories aren't about dark-filled dramas filled with angst. they're about fun and adventure, and i this movie was definitely fun. seriously, does every single comic book movie have to be dark, hip, and mature? i see a movie to be entertained and this movie did the job. i definitely think families, especially kids, will love this movie. i know my inner child did. I thought this was a very fun movie, and captured the characters very well. Different from Batman Begins, because of the nature of the team dynamic. Not as dark, or as serious as Spider-Man, and much more fun than X-Men. A much better production than Daredevil, Elektra, Hulk, Punisher, or that awful Catwoman movie. Just slightly below Batman Begins. I'd put it up there with Spider-Man, and the first X-Men. Expand

I can see why people would like this film and I can see why people would despise it. I'd prefer to rate this movie a 6.5 but that's not an option thus the 7. Perhaps the best way for you to get anything out of my review would be to let you know where I stand on comic book movies. My favourites would be Unbreakable, Sin City, Spider-Man 2 and Incredibles Just below that I would place Spider-Man, Hellboy, X-Men 1&2 Then there are thos I consider enjoyable at some level but nothing special and some with serious flaws Batman, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Punisher Tthe god awful group Batman sequels, Daredevil And finally movies I have not seen because I'm pretty sure I'll really really hate them Electra, Catwoman If you agree somewhat with my grouping above then read on I went into FF expecting to really hate it. I hated when they named the director, hated what I had heard about the story, hated the origin change of Doom and was very worried about what the Thing was going to look like. The story ended up being a little cheesy and simplistic. There were some real groaner lines but the kids in the theatre all laughed at each and every one of them. The special effects were of X-Men leve imo. Some things looked better than others. But over all I believe the captured the heart of the FF. The Thing and Johnny Storm were nailed. Mr. Reed Richards and Sue Storm were less effective. Reed didn't really come across as a leader or as a super scientist. It's something I hope will be far more developed in the next film (if there is one). There was also very little chemistry between Reed and Sue. Sue storm was the weakest fo the four due largely, imo, to a very weak script for the character. The biggest weakness in the film was Doom. Very poorly executed. Not frightening. Hollywood just refuses to stay true to their source material, believing they know better, and failing miserably. When will they learn? This movie was not made for fans of the comic book. It's just a light airy little romp that the kids will love and the adults will be able to tolerate. Nothing memorable but certainly not Daredevil bad. This is not Filet Mignon. It's McDonald's. But we all enjoy a big Mac every now and then don't we? Expand

Frankly, I can't believe how positive the reviews are for this abysmal flic. I like boneheaded action as much as the next guy, but Fantastic 4 is a major mess. I saw it and all I can say is...Im surprised! I can't believe the critics damn this film so much! I think that the critics are doing what they're paid to do though...Be critical...because they were way too critical with this one. Sure script-wise it's a cheesefest, and it doenst stack up to quality comic book powerhouses like Spider-man, Batman Begins, and Sin City, but if you want to go to a movie just to have a good time, this movie more than delivers. Also, I believe the main four were cast perfectly, especially Evans and Chiklis, who nail Storm's cocky fly guy attitude and the anguish Ben Grimm suffers from his disfiguring gift/curse as the Thing. The only thing that made me cringe was Julian Mcmahon, who gave perhaps the cheesiest villain performance ever, but luckily, they did the right thing by not giving Von Doom as Much screentime as the Four, however i'm sure Nip/Tuck Fans will eat it up. It may not be a life-altering film, but if you want to see some A+ special effects, and well choreographed fight scenes, go see F4. I went in looking to be dissappointed, but I came out smiling. I was left with an empty "Daredevil" feeling from this movie. Not worth a big screen shell out of cash. Paced ever too quickly and lacking deth with the characters. I enjoyed the first and last reels the most. The exposition of the cosmic storm was intriguing and the action and character interaction once they were all settled in with their powers was enjoyable. The middle however was choatic, silly, and just downright mishandled by Tim Story who needs to learn how to tell one. Thumbs down and the sequel should be handed over to someone who can fix this mistake and bring these great characters some dignity. Expand

The movie was ok at best. The biggest problem is that one of the hottest women in the world (Alba) has to go invisible. Too bad!

A just absolutely horrible film, no plot, the action is almost non-existent, it sucked worse than any movie I could possibly imagine, I would rather watch the CGI animated Barbie Doll movies than see this again. I don't recommend it to anyone. This movie sucks.

Does every year have to have a super hero movie like 2004's Catwoman? Judging by 2005's Fantastic Four, I'm afraid so.

Even though it's no Batman and Robin (by this I mean it's not terrible), it's still no Batman Begins (by this I mean it's not Spectacular). That is pretty much the whole movie, the FX are not terrible but aren't great, the acting isn't awful but not classic, and the only thing that isn't either is the dialouge, and I don't mean that in a good way. Batman Begins, Red Eye, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the Underated War of the Worlds are still better, but I will more likely than not still get this. I won't use money or gift certificates though. I'll wait for my birthday or if my friend wants to give it. So it's good, but I won't use money top own it though. I disagree with almost everyone who said this was the best movie of the summer, but I'm not calling them retarded or stupid as I usually do, since the only time I do it is when they insult my opinion, and since they don't I'll respect their opinion, as long as they respect mine. Lacks the majesty of other superhero flicks such as the stunning Batman Begins and Spider-Man 2, and reveals itself as a dissapointing cliché ridden flick full of superficial characters and mind-blowing effects, but hey, at least it entertains a bit and the actors are carismatic, no doubt.

It stays true to the story of the comics and it has Jessica Alba in it, so that will be enough to draw in a lot of fans. However, it just doesn't have the energy that some of the other recent Marvel comics-turned-movies, such as the X-Men series and Spiderman series, have. Still, I suppose it's much better than that god awful version of Daredevil with Ben Affleck.

Stick with the critics on this one and avoid it altogether. I'm always up for mindless summer fun (although I would have loved this one to be in the same league as X-Men, Batman ... or even Daredevil for that matter!). Instead we get a completely pointless, amateur, and quite frankly ... boring movie. I was actually shocked at the below average graphics and HORRIBLY below low acting (this will NOT boost Jessica Alba's asking price). I'd compare the movie to The Thing: stiff, clunky and destructive ... but at least he was solid, something the movie in no way was! Expand

Awful movie. cgi is cruddy compared to so many films that are out now. bad story with mean and boring characters. the point of the story is lost in the first 20 minutes. im still trying to figure out why doom's mask can withstand a supernova like the rest of his body when it's just a humanitarian award (another ?) from a poor country. nobody should see this god awful comic book crap when they could see something like Batman Begins. The movie was great the first 2/3's of the movie but you start to wonder if theres any fighting in the movie, and leave the theater feeling like somethings missing because there's nowhere near as much as "spider-man 2", or "batman". Chris Evans was funny and michael chiklis did good too. Jessica alba didnt quite save the movie but mr fantastic was nothing special. If your choosing between batman or fantastic four, choose batman cuz this movie is not so fantastic. Expand

I'm not sure what the critics were expecting when they went to see this one. It is a light, sitcom - like popcorn flick for the summer, which pretty much sums up what the comic was like at the beginning. I'm somewhat aware of the Fantastic Four outside of the movie, and I thought they did a great job handling each character's reaction to their new powers. No, it's not action or plot packed, but it was a nice introduction to these characters. Overall, this movie falls right alongside X-Men in feeling and character set-up. Expand

"Fantastic Four" is a decent popcorn movie, but it really left me feeling like there was a lot missing. The only acting job I cared for was Michael Chiklis' take on The Thing's self-pity and disgust at people's reactions to his appearance. Ioan Griffudd was too good at being banal and stuffy Reed Richards, and Jessica Alba was completely miscast as the geneticist Susan Storm. Frankly I think she got the role just for the caught-visible-without-clothing gags. Chris Evans is predictable as the insanely cocky Human Torch, although the play between Torch and The Thing is often funny. Victor von Doom has become a ruthless millionare instead of an ruthless dictator, but he still does his best to play the psychotic power-mad role anyways. The ending was dropped off so much at the end, it was as if the director was begging to do a sequel. With the stilted dialogue, silly love triangle and shameless product marketing, I hope they find someone else to do it. Just bring back Michael Chiklis! Expand

This film may be the best unintentional comedy of the summer. Don't get me wrong -- as a serious, believable film -- it was an absolute disaster, but I don't think I've laughed this hard at a movie in a while. The best part is that every gadget/etc in this film is so painstakingly obviously labeled (see: "CAUTION: Hyper Cooling Unit"). Poor writing, poor acting, poor directing. But if you're looking for a comedy that will entertain you -- this is it. Expand

Minus the stars, there's little to recommend here. Took me right back to 'Wild Wild West', that summer unblockbuster from a few years back. You - don't remember that one? Well, this will be about as memorable in a few years. Nice product tie-ins with SBC, though. Other than that, watch the trailer a bunch and then go see the penguin movie for a much better time.

I remember seeing the trailer months ago. I also remember then thinking, "Oh my God. This is going to be horrible." The cheesy catch phrases, dated effects, and "directed by Tim Story" all just made me go *ugh*. Oh, how right I was. It's just bad news when you see a preview for a flick and you can just 'tell' if it's a load of horse dung. Still, being a cynical bastard, I HAD to see it. I went along with some friends (they hadn't had the same preminition that I did) yesterday and I'll say this... I laughed harder at the crap this movie presented me with than I did during the Longest Yard. The dramatic scenes when the heroes discover their powers are actually hilarious poorly scripted failures at "suprise and shock" moments ("Look at me!" - sees floating clothes - "But! I can't!" OR "You're hot..." - glances at nurse, stammering - "Thank you... you too" - pause - "No, you have a horrible fever"). I nearly cried at this unintentional comedy gold. Doctor Doom doesn't seem evil, either. He just seems like an ass (unlike Willem DaFoe in Spiderman - EVIL). Not to mention the poorly paced and directed fight scenes. Why is Tim Story - remember Taxi, that was him - directing what SHOULD be a series of cool and explosive battles? Instead, the 'XXXXTREME' close ups of forcefields or fireballs, numerous flying cars, and combat-based gags end up being as funny as the "dramatic dialouge." Ok, so far we've established the poor dialouge and subpar fights. Need we mention the special effects? Even to the untrained eye you can just tell that Mr. Fantastic should look better when he's all stretched out (but, I still think it looks funny when a 'real' guy is stretched like that - doesn't translate well from the comics) and that Jessica Alba isn't becoming invisible too well (before she goes all clear and wavey you can actually pick out when she goes from "real" to CGI, just poorly done). Only the Human Torch looks decent. Moving on, Tim Story is Hollywood's Crap Director du jour - right near Uwe Bowell, shitifier of Alone in the Dark. Finally, why does Hollywood insist on changing origins? Not so much the 4's origin but Victor Von Doom's. He went from "disfigured, crazy ex-roomie of Mr. Fantastic who went on to rule a dystopian country and blames all his suffering on his 'perfect' roommate" to "generic power hungry wallstreetish assh*le." So, yea, sacrifice the interesting storyline to dumb it down for movie goers? That worked... and so did the crappy effects, bad director, and poor dialouge. I'm going to go rewatch X-Men 2 to get this movie out of my head. Expand

FF has its fun moments, especially scenes with Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) and the Thing (Michael Chiklis). Those two are the only reasons to see the movie - they made the movie enjoyable, but weren't enough to have me come away feeling satisfied. Alba is super hot, but not the most believeble in her particular role. Reed Richards never believably emerges as the leader he's supposed to be. In the comics, the Fantastic Four always battled baddies on a bigger, more cosmic scale than Spiderman or Batman did. Yet this movie seems so much smaller and superficial than the great Spiderman, X-Men, and Batman movies. Even Hellboy blows this movie away in terms of larger than life action and huge superhero battles. The pacing is just horrible, as the "big" climax seems to just end suddenly. The FF defeat a terrible, TERRIBLE version of Dr Doom in less than ten minutes without ever appearing to be in any real peril. I thought it was still the middle of the movie and there was going to be a REAL finale to come. They literally have to show a graphic on the screen that says "THE END" just to make you realize that it really was over that quickly. Before this movie, Dr Doom was considered the most powerful, commanding, and complex villain in comic book history, but this screenplay takes away everything great about the character and just repalces it with your typical "evil-for-no-reason-billionare-sociopath" character. Oh yeah, and suddenly Dr Doom can shoot lightning and is made out of metal. (No) Thank you to Tim Story and company for flushing Marvel's greatest villain down the shitter, and possibly guaranteeing that the world will never get to see a FF movie done right. Hopefully enough 8 year olds will see the movie that it will warrant a sequel. But PLEASE get a writer and director that have an iota of a clue next time. Expand

this is probably the first time that i'm so thoroughly dumbfounded by movie critics. even when i disagree, i can still see whaere they come from. but this latest from marvel has the same quality and tone as most of the other (good) movies from their line. the CGI was very good and even believable, the characters were great (jonny storm had all the reason to be insipid, whiny, and annoyingly AWFUL, but instead he was funny), and the story was fun and exciting. my only misgiving was dr. doom, who was all wrong. from the origin to the casting, that was something i couldnt like. the movie overall was a fantastic summer offer, and if critics were going to savagely prune something like this, they should have started with the first x-men movie. 1. This clumsy, cheesy, chintzy adaptation, with its F/X that look dated the moment you see them, is like something left over from the '60s.
  2. A comic-book movie unashamed of its roots, meaning it's unabashed about being silly, overwrought nonsense, which works to its benefit--so much so that you're almost rooting for it by the end.
  3. 30
Directing seems an unduly elegant term for what Hollywood hack du jour Tim Story (Barbershop, Taxi) does here -- the action scenes are so choppily constructed that their excitement disappears faster than the Invisible Woman.
