This reminded me of those afterschool specials I use to watch on TV in the early 80's. It has a great message and Logan Lerman is convincing as the main character, but the dialogue and acting ability of the rest of the cast is uneven. Similarly, Luke Wilson was sorely miscast as the bumbling good cop. I'm guessing the children's novel is way better than this adaptation.

This film is for those who love Florida -- the real Florida rather than the manufactured Florida, for fans of Carl Hiaasen, and for environmentalists. The stars are the Florida scenics -- lovingly photographed, and the owls. Like many good stories, there are embelleshments. The bullodozer is huge, the characters are colorful, and the plot vividly drawn. But, as for most stories, one must sit back, suspend disbelief, and enjoy the show. For those who do, and for the filmgoers described above, the film will be warm and engaging. Expand

There are so many jaded critics out there who demand that films be dark and edgy in order to be considered "good" that it is not surprising that some would not enjoy Hoot. But they lose sight of the fact that Hoot is not aimed at film critics but at families. It was refreshing to see a film that championed kids being kids -- not MTV wannabees. The idea that if we act locally we can make a difference is also a story worth seeing. The acting is spirited, the soundtrack is fun, and kids will enjoy it. Another winner from Walden Media and New Line. Expand

Any film that show ecoterrorists and no punishment for their ecoterrorism is a failure. It is one thing to teach children responsibility and love for, and care of the enviroment. It is another thing to teach them illegal activities to get what they want.

I highly recommend Hoot if you are looking for a good film with a strong message of environmentalism and responsibility for your kids. I took my family to a screening and we had a ball. We had all read the book ( several times) and found the film to be a faithful representation of the book. We loved it!

HOOT was a fun film. Neat story. Good music. Worth spending the ticket price and a couple of hours.

For a kid's movie, this was terrific. My 6 1/2 and 9 year olds loved it, got caught up in the adventure, and now want to be environmentalists. The message about standing up for what you believe in is well done -- even if the villians are too simplistic.

Come on people, this is a cute movie. It has all kinds of hilarious jokes embedded in it, and shows off a beautiful, vanishing Florida. I mean, I grew up in LA, so I don't know Florida for beans, but I loved what I saw in this show. What's more, the kids are nice to each other, pretty much. Worth seeing on many levels, yes.

Any charm and character ascribed to Carl Hiaasen's bestselling book have been homogenized in Wil Shriner's flat screenplay and direction.
  2. The kids have good chemistry, there's some fun oddball humor stuck in around the slapstick, and the gorgeous photography of the Gulf Coast beaches, waterways and wildlife brings their mission to life.
  3. Hoot may be warm and fuzzy with its adorable owls, triumphant kids and inviting Florida groves. But its forced, innocuous humor is unlikely to amuse anyone but the very young -- and the extremely forgiving.
