The acting was amazing, the imagery superb. Although it can get boring, Howards End is a classic.

Misses some important elements of the novel, however, a good attempt to grasp Forster's appeal for tolerance in an ever changing society.

Very disappointing - despite the lovely settings, powerful story and some of the best actors. Performances unconvincing, and less than had expected.

This is simply an amazing film. The acting was so suberp, I was walking out of the house to go do something I had looked forward to all day, the film came on and within moments I was glued to my chair. Beautifully filmed and acted. Emma Thompson won every award known to man for this role including the oscar.

There's a bunch of Merchant Ivory flicks, and you're nobody movie-wise unless you've sat through them all. But they start to merge in the memory as the same actors, sets, clothes and English rain are recycled. This one in particular deals with the transfer of property, so things are going to get sticky. Expect precise labored character development. Hapless Edwardian tongues will opinionate hypocrisy and create controversy with the finesse of a manure spreader. Towards the end you'll be overcome with a sense that, because you are such a patient cultured viewer, you are witnessing something very special and redemptive, a feeling of the nobility, privilege and sacrifice of class position that will stay with you until you are interrupted by some telemarketer or otherwise annoyed by a problem considerably less lofty. Merchant and Ivory have regathered many of the cast and crew from their earlier films to work on this reproduction to exquisite effect.

The filmmakers have allowed themselves an overlong 140 minutes in order to preserve as much of the plot as possible, but they have bypassed many of the novel's key ideas and ironies.

The splendid cast embodies the characters so fully that the events actually seem to be happening to them, instead of unfolding from a screenplay.
