This movie is a big exciting dance between Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin....and I love every minute of it! The other casts, story, plot, and music are just nice entourage.

Meryl Streep is magnificent, as she always is. Alec Baldwin is wonderfully cast and gives a memorable performance. Steve Martin is effective in a subdued role. It’s very enjoyable, a fresh story and great entertainment. Very well written, funny and touching. I love that it wasn't predictable, I really didn't know how it was going to end. Great job.

Okay. Not everyone lives in Malibu and owns a French bakery catering to movie stars. Not everyone is a partner in an architectural firm specializing in million-dollar home improvements. Maybe Meryl Streep smiles and giggles a bit too much. But the comedy is, at least, inspired by some believable reality. Alec Baldwin is dead-on hilarious, Steve Martin is a charming leading man and Meryl Streep is light and lovable. Mark J. Expand

I really don't get the negativity about this movie. Sure, it's not deep or outrageous or wonderfully novel and clever. And, it is a bit long. Nevertheless, it has a solid storyline and most of the characters are solid. Most important, however, is that the film is actually funny. Some of the gags have been around a long time, but most are fresh, adult and fun. I saw it with an audience of people mostly over 50. The women, in particular, were cackling and guffawing loudly and frequently. I think someone must be at least a worldly and married 25 yrs or older to have a reasonable appreciation of this film. I loved this movie and can't tell you the last time I heard a movie audience laughing so hard. For those critics who gave this movie bad reviews, all you have to do is look at the box office totals and see how out of touch they are with the people.

It's Complicated is very similar to Something's Gotta Give in story and demographic audience but with a couple hilarious set pieces and a wonderful performance by Alec Baldwin who should be a factor in the Best Supporting Actor race next month. Our parents generation had Pillow Talk, now we get It's Complicated, if we were our parents, it would be awesome, but we're not, and it's just a good night at the movies. Expand

John Krasinski almost steals the show as the son-in-law, but Streep is tremendous and the whole thing shows how life and love together can be, complicated by others.

The actors are well cast, and their natural and awkward interactions are directed with a light touch. The writing is natural and clever. Refreshingly, this movie shows emotional maturity and respects the intelligence of the viewers. It is straightforward but well-paced. Most importantly, the actors' subtle, comfortable performances and great comedic timing are the glues that bind this well-executed package into a entertaining whole. Expand

Alec Baldwin great as always! Meryl Streep also terrific and relaxed. By contrast, Steve Martin woefully miscast in the romantic nice guy lead. His character also suffered from the writing - I found it impossible to sympathize with his character, there was nothing particularly attractive or interesting about his personality. All in all, a pleasant enough distraction.

Put off by recurrent Hollywood practice of placing story in megamansion/estate. This is where film makers live, perhaps, but not where people live, and it gets tiresome to watch - especially when a central theme is the planning of a major edition to what already is a White House sized home (including a kitchen redo of what is already a commercial scale kitchen). There is also a "garden" which looks like a small farm at Versailles, ready for photographing for a coffee table book. In other words, the characters and settings were ridiculous. Expand

In the afterglow of making love to his ex-wife for a second time, Jake(Alec Baldwin) tells Jane(Meryl Streep), "We grew into the people we always wanted to be." Funny thing, though; the ten years, the intervening years of their divorce, which it took to become the finished products Jake suggests that they'd become, seems to largely have been accomplished without the influence of each other's matrimonial company. Jane survived the divorce, and even prospered during the interim of her husband's departure. The sadness brought on by Empty Nest Syndrome, notwithstanding, this single businesswoman is doing fine; she has enough funds(as a result of her successfully-ran patisserie) to expand the house and remodel the kitchen, so, perhaps, divorce gave her wings. The motivation behind Jane's affair with Jake is designed to mollify, not horrify, the moviegoer, which is why "It's Complicated" falls short of being a French farce. (Something Baldwin says implies that it's so.) This is very much a Hollywood-sanctioned product, and this is how: While gabbing with close friends at a potluck, revenge against Agnes(Jake's much-younger wife, played by Lake Bell), the former other woman, is voiced by Jane, but the filmmaker relegates this juicier motivation behind the ironic sex to a mere byproduct of her residual feelings for Jake. "It's Complicated" is really not that complicated at all, since Jane has romantic notions toward her ex-husband from the outset. (In a major studio motion picture, the female protagonist can't be a vindictive home-wrecker.) Don't get me wrong: "It's Complicated" has quite a few laugh-worthy moments(and that's high praise, given the recent slate of "comedies"), but it's so depressingly safe. On "Inside the Actor's Studio w/James Lipton", Ms. Streep answered, "Edgy," as being her least favorite word on the survey which the host conducts at the end of every show, and true to form, "It's Complicated" is not edgy, at all. To be edgy, such entertaining of romantic notions on Jane's part should have been written as an unexpected outgrowth of her initial plan to be a middle-aged femme fatale. (The professional accomplishments of single women too often are undermined by some deficiency in their love lives.) "It's Complicated" makes adultery look innocent because the film mostly villifies the younger woman, even though, it would seem that Jake became the man he so admires, in due part to her guiding influence. Overall the movie was very good the acting was great the only real problem was the film it self. The last half of the movie showed mic booms and mic's hanging over the actors heads and prop guys hiding or trying to. There was just as many laughs and wonderments at that as in the movie. The film makers get an F, very unprofessional.

Nancy Meyers' philosophy seems to be that if you put reasonablly sensible adults into ridiculous situations, you will get some laughs. In this case, you do. A cast whose abilities range from good to brilliant makes the most of the screenplay given them. Smart direction does the same. An ending that refuses to follow a formula took me by surprise.

I went to see this expecting worse, but was pleasantly surprised. A very enjoyable film, excellent if clownish performances. The kids mug a lot, the locations so upscale as to be off-putting, no one has financial worries, hardly a trace of minorities. On the other hand, the film allows late-middle-aged people with their wrinkles, cardiac disorders, and flab to shine and behave like teenagers all over again. On this note a little optimism. Expand

This is the most absurdly vacuous and unfunny comedy I've seen in decades -- a ridiculous, irritating, unrealistic piece of fluff fantasy for middle-aged women. I couldn't believe that Meryl Streep would participate. I've always loved her but by the end of the film, I was so annoyed by the near-continous tinkle of her laughter -- before and after her every line, it seems -- that I started to hate her. Don't see it, don't rent it, don't order it on Instant Play or Netflix, don't look at the movie posters. It sucks like few films have ever sucked before. Expand

If you liked Sex and the City you might like this miserable bore. Otherwise, it's a terrible waste of acting talent. One funny scene with a laptop computer in a bedroom is what gets the movie a 2 instead of a 0. Basically it's about a manipulative, whiny, self-obsessed lawyer repeatedly conning a sappy ex into giving him her time and yet another chance. The guy is too much of a total jerk to care about and the wife is too much of a fool. Top it off with adult offspring who behave like 12-year-olds and you've got a film to avoid like the plague. What an ironic title for a film so surface and forced I felt it leaching the art out of me as I sat there stunned and dispirited that the can-do-wrong Meryl Sreep could thrash about and do so wrong. Baldwin is terrible, too; he's much more nuanced in his sitcom and sketch comedy work than in this weird celebration of people so white they're disappearing. It's all so false I felt guity for wishing something awful would happen to not only the people on the screen, but the filmmakers themselves just to hopefully bestow on them some character. Expand

With having had a streak of great Streep films, "It's Complicated" is rather underwhelming. Just another romantic comedy, it feels more like a rip of from "Something's Gotta Give" than anything else. Meryl Streep is pretty good in it, but she has rather little to work with, since the characters are not very well developed and the storyline is not extremely interesting. The film isn't even that funny. I guess, there were some entertaining parts, and the cast is pretty decent, so there is definitely something to find in the film, especially for rom-com fans! Expand

Lately comedies have been sex romps and teenage movies. It’s pretty refreshing when an adult comedy is made. No not porno people but a mature film with characters we could relate to. Its Complicated brings that to the screen even though with its flaws it’s a very enjoyable ride. Meryl Streep plays Jane Adler a single woman who has been divorced for more then 10 years. Her husband Jake Adler played by Alec Baldwin cheated on her and marry the woman he cheated on her. The both of them are now seeing each other more then often because one their kids is getting graduated from college. One of the things I like the most about the movie was that Streep and Baldwin gives huge personalities for their characters. Streep is a chef who has learned to live alone and cope with the fact the she might end up alone for a while. Baldwin plays as a man when you look in his face you can tell he made a terrible mistake and regrets it everyday. They travel to New York for the graduation and by sheer of luck they are both at the same hotel. The kids want to go to a party and Baldwin’s wife couldn’t make it. This sets up a very good interplay between Streep and Baldwin at the hotel bar. They start remembering the good times and how their relationship was. They drink nonstop and then the sparks fly. The film does show really good the cons of their choices and how it affects the characters. There are other subplots most of them are mostly to help the plot reach where it wants to. Baldwin and his wife want a baby, but these topics is easily rushed and was there just to inspire Baldwin to cheat and go with his ex-wife. There is a good subplot with Steve Martin’s character Adam Schaffer an architect for Streep. They start having a friendship and that could lead to more even though she’s with Baldwin. They both are giving what they needed to each other but ten years too late. Streep has accepted the fact of being alone and looking out for herself. Baldwin is just a man who finally admits he lost out on something good. The kids in the film are use as a gimmick only to produce more funny events with the parents. I felt they were not necessary, Streep and Baldwin has enough talent to spearhead the movie by themselves. The problem with the film is that it’s really predictable. I pretty much was able to tell what was going to happen. There has been films like It’s Complicated but I found this one very enjoyable and worth to watch. The cliché and predictable framework and can be easily ignored because of Streep and Baldwin including Steve Martin. They pretty much make the movie more entertaining then it could have been although most of the other characters could be one-sided they were well acted and brought funny elements too. This is a much better movie then Leap Year that I reviewed a while ago. While Leap Year I admire for its sweetness, It’s Complicated is much more mature and dealing with real life problems. While Leap Year is just Hollywood romantic comedy fantasy that we get everyday. A good grown up comedy. Expand

You probably won't like this movie if you're not a fan of chick flicks That said, fans of Nancy Meyers's other works (The Holiday, Something's Gotta Give) will feel right at home. Like her other movies, this is set in a visually stunning environment that many would love to live in. The story is fun (if contrived in parts) and the cast is a joy to watch. No, it's not entirely realistic and won't challenge you intellectually, but it's a fun movie to watch and will join the list of Meyers's other movies that I watch repeatedly. Expand

Tough movie to review. While most of the criticisms are fair, the movie is - in the end - pretty amusing. Some movies are made to "deliver a message" and some are meant purely to entertain. This is much more of the latter. Worth seeing for pure laughs...

It's not complicated, it's not well made, and it's not worth your time. Basic run of the mill chick flick themes and ideas trying to masquerade as something more by getting good actors to do bad work. a couple of mildly enjoyable moments (thanks to Alec Baldwin) can't save this one.

This is a comedy? What a bore! I watched it for the many familiar faces in it and I have never seen so much talent do absolutely nothing. Krasinsky managed a small bit of comic performance in the middle of the film so thanks for that. This movie had no tension whatsover. Even when the characters were mildly bothered by their actions, they were totally thrilled with their perfect lives. And those kids? Where do you get kids who were little more than cardboard cutouts of persons? This is a perfect movie to keep on the DVR for when you cannot sleep. If I hear a soft and mellow guitar background one more time, I will shoot myself. no no no no no. Expand

I intentionally gave this film a miss as I have a hunch it is not my cup of tea after Nancy Meyers’s previous THE HOLIDAY 2006 (a 6/10) is so tepidly stale, which has offset all the asset which radiates from SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE 2003 (an 8/10). Then after a dense series of Febiofest cinema attending, I was crying out for a light comedy, even a middle-aged chick flick and there is Meryl Streep, what’s the worst that could happen? With a preconceived idea that she is too smart for the dumber role she portrays in the film, finally there is a film even the omnipotent Meryl Streep could not save (entirely). Although everything in the film is too high-class to be realistic for ordinary divorced ugly-ducklings, It’S COMPLICATED seems to tell us that the complexity is not because it encompasses a classic love-triangle plight, but the true fountainhead lies within a woman’s volatile strain of her emotions, which capriciously spawns doubt, sentiment and other spin-offs, which also are the staples of what is made of a woman, an advice to heterosexual men, unless you have a master degree in womanology, you will never completely understand a woman, the only feasible alternative is to set your own threshold bar there and find one which could match the criterion and endure everything hereafter. It may sound pungent, but judging by the information the film is spreading, it is what I get from my 2 hours therapy time. Meryl Streep is in her best shape considering her actual threescore age and taking on a leading role in a successful rom-com, a miracle will not repeat itself (though Diane Keaton went further in SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE, with a Oscar nomination!), but her character is constantly in a stasis of self-denying and playing hard-to-get, which hamstrings her from presenting some full-blown range of her knack to jostle with her two co-stars an almost 10-year-old younger Alec Baldwin (an immature boyish man in his fifties with a doggy pretentiousness) and a Botox-wrecked comedian Steve Martin (whose static forehead and creepily synthetic smile may curtail his subsequent career, he and Renee Zellweger may share more common topic!). 1. It's Complicated is middle-aged porn, the specialty of Meyers, who also set ladies and interior decorators drooling over homes and gardens in 2006's "The Holiday."
  2. What Meyers doesn't do is take chances. She sticks to formula and predictability. In "Complicated," this is as much a matter of casting as writing.

It's bad enough that Nancy Meyer's latest conventional romcom is blessed with a title so bluntly unimaginative as to seem facetious; the rub is that it's not even a truthful assessment.
