I guess my favorite is the scene after the meeting with Bishma, when Giuliette comes home to find a sexy Spaniard in her garden, making Sangria with the help of her housemaids; a delicate, ethereal, wistfully beautiful film about a woman's interior life...see it if you possibly can, ladies, but leave the ball and chain at home, cause he'll never get it.

Fellini foolishly thought he could make an entire movie by weaving together his fantasies and dreams. The resulting fabric is threadbare in many parts. To be sure, there are some awesome surrealistic spectacles that surpass those in 8 1/2; however, like the last 2/3 of Kurosawa's Ran, there's no central gravity to hold them together and charge them with emotional meaning. Fellini, by then an artistic megalomaniac, wasn't exactly primed to understand the feminine psyche. Still, one of the most exuberant and unabashedly celebratory works of mid 60s, when the Film Generation was coming into its own, and it seemed like cinema, as total art, was limitless as the expanding universe. 1. Masina gives one of her most expressive performances.
  2. Above all, the film is just wonderfully ... well, Fellini-esque. It looks like nothing the cinema has seen since then.
  3. Sometimes the cinema is just heavenly, and this is one of those times.
