So the script and the performances aren't exactly Oscar material, but it scarcely matters given that the real stars here are the ILM-created dinosaurs, a miracle of modern moviemaking.
even after 30 years a fantastic movie and one of Steven Spielberg's masterpieces. I don't need to mention that the dinosaurs looked revolutionary back then. Even today they have aged relatively well.
The movie is a must-see.
Given the complexity of attitudes and the ambiguous take on the family represented in such Spielberg films as “E.T.'' and “Poltergeist,'' the bland affirmations of Jurassic Park seem platitudinous and insincere. He's forcing it here, and it shows. [11 June 1993, Friday, p.A]
A dumbed-down adaptation of Michael Crichton's techno-novel on the dangers of dinosaur cloning, it's not Spielberg at the top of his game, but it's dino-mite just the same.
Perfectly passable kiddie escapism. It has a thrill or two, and a chill or three, but it has no poetry, little sense of wonder, no resonant subtext (Jungian or otherwise), no art... When it's over, it's gone. Extinct.
Steven Spielberg shows his true talent in making blockbusters with Jurassic Park. Making the human characters interesting and memorable, while also giving them clever lines, already elevates the film. But the dinosaurs are the true star of the show, including game changing CGI, an epic soundtrack and so much more make this film a timeless classic.
Definitely a bit overrated, but still watchable. The movie was boring and slow but finally caught up to all the hype. It's worth watching if you just want to see crazy dinosaurs killing humans in gruesome ways.
The main problem I had with jurassic park is that it doesn't live up to the incredibly high calibre of the cast and crew. Actors like sam neill and samuel l jackson are stuck in a simplistic action film with not much going for it. Don't get me wrong, steven spielberg brings his directing flair elevating this above your average monster film but the sub par script doesn't allow for character development with wayne knights character being a laughably stupid character. For that matter its nice to see that spielberg sticks to the convention that all characters in a monster movie are remarkably dumb. Overall the movie can provide long moments of tension and some great set pieces but not much else.
Jurassic Park is mindless eye candy. What little plot there is in the novel was stripped away in the film to create a pointless story of dinosaurs eating people. I suspect that, as digital special effect improve, the film will fall into oblivion.
