Landau and Burstyn are at the top of their craft in this. Was it lacking a bit in it's total explanation and plausibility? Yeah, a bit. But if you just GO with it, it's a very touching experience. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellen Burstyn is lovely, still. And Martin Landau is still an actor of great skill ... but this film doesn't do either of them justice. First you suspend your disbelief with a plot focused on late-in-life love at first sight. THEN you're asked to buy in to a disturbing twist that makes it a whole different kind of movie. You could handle the upsetting aspects of the twist if you hadn't already stretched yourself to invest in the initial premise! I actually bought this DVD thinking it would be a nice gift for a friend, but abandoned that idea because it's too damned depressing. Expand

By the time it arrives it's too late and way too contrived.A great premise marred by poor execution. A notion this complex requires more foreshadowing and less sap. It's so saccharin for so long, you can't wait for the hammer to drop. By the time it arrives it's too late and way too contrived. Landau is a fine actor but you'd never know it here, mostly, I think, because his character is a puppet, pushed and manipulated all the way through. The montages attempting to illustrate the his state of mind are hazy and repetitive â Expand
