This is such a beautiful movie. Not just the animation, but also the involving story and the characters as well. If you let it, the movie will be a treat to watch. However, you really should watch the subtitled version because the original language is always better than the dubbed version. Expect to see this in the Academy Awards in 2003.

This film is awesome. I feel sorry for people who can't see this because they can't look past the surface.

Nice visuals, and the political theme is well excecuted, but it's hard to tell which party supports what. The characters don't have much substance, but they are used well. Adding substnace to them would've made this film even better.

Just to see how the Japanese render snow in "Metropolis" is worth the price of admission. And the quieter scenes are equally exciting as the apocalyptic ones. They are the same kind you find in non-animated features. That's the difference between cartoons in Japan and the United States. Although it's commendable of Tri-Star to release "Metropolis" without off-putting American voice-overs (like Claire Danes in "Princess Mononoke"), the subtitles can be frustrating. You will not want to divert your eyes for one second away from the mis-en-scene. Expand

Breathtaking animation and an awesome climax, but it doesn't always work.

The story might not be the best one, but the grafics and excruciating detail of this movie make up for its poor story. this movie deserves IMAX theater, and after seeing it you will have a whole new opinion on japanese anime.

An underrated masterpiece, even though the Osama Tezuka version is far superior to it. This might be the best mix of cel and computer animation of all animated films. The plot really is nothing new, but the characters (Japanese subbed version) have a lot of heart. However, the film is hurt a little by the sometimes slow pacing and familar story.

Impressive as graphics for a video game. Unwatchable otherwise.

They should have produced this in 3D for IMAX as Metropolis is the kind of work destined to blow the minds of stoners everywhere.
  2. A hallucinatory tour de force of color, perspective and scale, virtually encapsulates the history of Japanese animation.

    Poetic, surreal, and curiously powerful.
