  • Summary: Mehboob Khan's 1957 grand drama of epic passions and colorful pageantry stars the great Nargis as Radha, one of the cinema's greatest heroines, who resists modernizations, temptations, natural disasters and threats of all varieties in order to raise her children on her own and hold on to her husband's land. The most popular film in Indian history.

The film is at once a sort of Indian "Stella Dallas," which finds the heroine making sacrifice after sacrifice on behalf of her family, and a "Gone With the Wind"-style epic of social change.

The performances are broad; the comedy is mainly slapstick. The politics are nationalist and vaguely left-wing.

More of a curio than a classic and it takes the strongest of constitutions to endure this film without entertaining notions of matricide

Arguably, and I say that because Bollywood has changed from this movie to the present day. Mother India has been bashed by critics, however, this is the Greatest Bollywood Movie, and perhaps one of the best Foreign Films known to man. Had we used sources from India, they would say the same. The movie possesed everything a great drama needs, but it had something special to make it a spectacular drama, the theme of motherhood, fittingly, for the name. The movie appears simple, but the few elements present in the movie make it hard to beat for any Drama Film known. Expand
