Mr. and Mrs. Iyer belongs to an elite class of movies, a definite cut above the rest. Aparna Sen has managed to create a film that makes you look deep into your conscience, while shooting an arrow deep into your heart. Its delicate love story seems to contrast sharply with the HIndu-Muslim riots in the setting. Yet there are parallels...

Wonderful movie..clear cut love story..showin that love transcends all barriers..yet not all...the undercurrents of riots..gives it a realistic touch though i feel it is predominanatly a love story.

The people who criticised this work most of them who aren't indians are yet to learn the depths of the indian thought and way of life. This movie isn't all about religious harmony but something rather different difficult to perceive.

It is a nice movie - like a snapshop or a short story. When the movie ends you almost feel that it ended too early. Aparna Sen has extracted good performences from the leading cast. The movie has a poignant background music score and good photography. But most importantly the movie is almost like a peom (much like Mrinal Sen's Khandahar or Aadmi Aur Aurat in early 1990s). Brings back the joy of watching a good movie - Satyajit Ray would have approved. Expand

One of the best movies I have seen. However, you need to understand a bit of Indian culture to really enjoy the subtle undercurrents portrayed in this movie. For eg., It may be hard to understand that konkana's performance is out of ordinary unless you understand that bengalis and tamils way of talking, mannerisms differ a lot! I could not have guessed that konkana is not tamilian!

Ultimately a feel-good movie, it did make its point fairly well. I don't agree with the NY Times reviewer about making the scapegoat a Jew -- he implies she did that as a cop-out. In Boston at a speaking engagement last week, Sen categorically said it was the only way to prevent the betrayal becoming belabored (logically, it does make sense. If you saw it, you'll know that having a Hindu or another Muslim do this would not have worked. The Hindu would have had to do some clinical explaining!) Expand

This is a great film, however not totally accesable to western audiences, unless they really know about india. SHould be watched by one and all!

A brilliant lyrical movie! It may appear a tad slow to the impatient western viewer but the pace is exactly right. The direction is subtle yet the attention to detail is painstaking. Konkona Sensharma steals the show.

A movie set in way of situation in contemporary India, the conflict of knowledge and Tradition, the conflict of education and religion, a true realisation.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. Brilliant acting, beautiful cinematography and Sultan Khan's heavenly voice is memorable- this film certainly deserves best film award. For the purpose of rating, I would ignore SamiR's comment - the rating given by other viewers prove my point.

I am indignant that anyone should consider this movie unsubtle, sermonizing, pseudo-lyrical, and soundbite ballyhoo. These are clearly critics whose understanding of cultural politics cannot break away from the specifics of September 11. The background to the film is the anti-minority carnage perpetrated by so-called religious groups in western India. Film critics need to be more educated if they are going to comment on international cinema! This is a profoundly sympathetic and gentle look at a small cross-section of humanity that has trespassed on the territory of maniacal persecution. Expand

A perfect movie....so subtle and so romantic and yet so strong and disturbing! Never has the railway station been so romanticized, since Gulzar's Ijaazat (starring the unforgettable Rekha and brilliant Naseeruddin Shah). I agree with Uma, the western critics have really much to learn about Indian thought and living to even dream of acknowleding this masterpiece!

Beautiful movie. Simple and hard hitting. The subtlety was largely in connection with the beautiful romantic theme behind it which puts the movie version of 'The Bridges of Madison County' to shame. The movie beautifully captured the apparent denial that most of the Indians live with in their daily lives be it to the religious turmoil or to the lack of common sense in the myriad of traditions followed. The subtlety was in the way it described an entire generation of well educated Indian women coming from well educated families go through the age old rituals and traditions unquestioningly. The subtlety was in the way it brought about the rampant mindless westernisation existing in the urban population of India through a bunch of jean clad kids. Each character speaks tales about the everyday Indian people. The man who does not see it right to help a woman with her irritable child but brings it to everyone's notice that he helped this woman with her handicapped brother, the male protagonist who unthinkingly helps Mrs Iyer at all times without ever making an issue of the fact. The older sister who still dictates the younger brother while his resigned wife deals with everything in a mildly non confrontational, humorous way. The old Muslim man and his 'love and hate' relationship with his dentures. The way he expects to be taken care of and the way he is taken care of. The level of comfort, a sort of routine, shared by the couple. The awkwardness of an arranged marriage portrayed in the conversation of the newly married couple, The lines that exist within India be it in the name of religion or of language or of education or of dressing? so many things so effectively conveyed! For an average viewer the subtlety can probably be lost in the loudness of the background which again is a reality in India too. Loud backgrounds form a part and parcel of Indian life. I thought the movie was about the decisions we take in life and why we take them, the beauty that we sometimes find but walk away from, the lines we use to define ourselves among the rest of the humans, the rules we live our entire lives by, the issues that we knowingly avoid, the love that we always dream of! I think the movie is filled with subtleties if only you have the sensibilities to appreciate it and look beyond the obvious. I cannot begin to understand how anybody could perceive the movie as one dimensional! And at last it is not about September 11th. This view point, relating everything remotely tragic to September 11th is what I call one dimensional in the extreme!! Expand

The actors appear game, yet director Aparna Sen, who conceived the film in the wake of September 11, resorts often to hokey pseudo-lyricism and prefers sound-bite ballyhoo to sociological depth.
  3. This is not a film for the impatient. But director Aparna Sen finds the poetry in romantic restraint, which is a mighty rare resource these days.
