  • Summary: This documentary is an unflinchingly candid portrait of a squad of American soldiers deployed in the doomed Iraq city of Falluja during the winter of 2004. (Rumur Releasing)
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 9 out of 14
  2. Negative: 1 out of 14
  1. Has an intimate, personal quality. Rather than showboating for the camera, the soldiers get to a deeper level, conveying a surprisingly reflective and aware sensibility.
  2. Straightforward and immensely powerful, the movie offers a blunt assessment of the war from soldiers currently fighting it, and their perspective is not pretty.
  3. Scott and Olds' is an essential movie, and one of the year's very best.
  4. Occupation: Dreamland presents a compelling study of composure and decency in the midst of overwhelming pointlessness.
  5. 70
A fair-minded (but hardly apolitical) grunt's-eye view of the war in Iraq that trusts the audience to draw its own conclusions.
  6. Their stories add up to an unflattering picture of how the U.S. chooses its soldiers.
  7. It's a movie with the exciting parts cut out.

Instead, this movie documents the day-to-day experience of the everyman soldier, the irony being that even though no one in the unit dies during the filming, the whole exercise of the occupation nonetheless comes off just as pointless, misguided and ultimately tragic. Viewer beware. It's pretty tame stuff, but offers some insight into the lives of ordinary US troops. Collapse
