One Hour photo is a study in atmospheres that, on closer inspection, has no depth. The film is almost thoughtless as it ambles along, twisting every ounce of tension it can from carefully crafted cinematography. There is no real meat to the film. Williams was the high point, but in reality he only appears stellar in contrast to the entirely dull and pointless characters that surround him. The film seeks to explore profound depths and complexity, but in the end just wades around in the kiddie pool. It has the markings of a truly great thriller, but sufferes from a fatal lack of meaning. One spends most of the film simply being appreciative about how out of character Wiliams manages to be... too bad. Untapped riches... Expand

Though the film starts off with little support for what comes to follow, it is nonetheless enitrely engaging and exciting to watch. The direction is so precise and stylish that although the plotline is familiar, it islike nothing else you've ever seen. And Williams is so pitch perfect that Sy becomes one of the most "real" characters portrayed in any other movie this year. Oh, it also scared the hell out of me. Expand

Without giving anything away, let me just say that "One Hour Photo" is missing a final scene between Cy and Nina(Connie Nielsen), because it's never clear to us if this lonely man's motive to hunt Mr. Yorkin is out of platonic or sexual love for his wife. At any point in the movie, does he want to be more than Uncle Cy? Nevertheless, Williams gives a great performance. How the film climaxes may be exciting to a general audience, but to moviegoers who recognize the name Killer Films, a sort of hush washes over us at Mark Romanek's betrayal of indie aesthethics. "One Hour Photo" is a great character study until the study of Cy gives way to a study of the director's ability to work an audience over. Expand

They could have added five minutes to the trailer and would have a complete, boring movie. Robin Williams is Robin Williams, but this film did not give him a chance to express his full range. Comparing this work to Insomnia is like comparing apples to oranges.

This film has a very interesting angle and human perspective. There is an interesting dynamic of how an emotionally fractured man, dislocated from societal norms feeds upon the normalcy of every day life through the photographs of his customers and how his ritual becomes emotionally connected with one families unfolding. Robin Williams shows that he is more than a comic genius ? he is superb!

Um--don't know how much we're supposed to "enjoy" a story about marital mistrust and unhealthy obsessions (see below opinion). I don't think it was intended to make us feel warm and fuzzy. And it really doesn't. But hey--at least Robin Williams has finally killed his image as a birthday party clown. Tenfold.

It is pleasing to see Robin Williams in a role other than his trademark cross-dressing scottish granny-styly fuzziness. He excels in this film, which features adept acting, and a compelling and disturbing plot. There is also a pleasing insertion of sex towards the end, which is disguised as a appropriate addition to William's growing insanity. One Hour Photo (actually an hour and a half) is pleasingly discombobulating, eye-poppingly so at parts, and features a suitably eerie soundtrack. However, there are many additions that could have been made to the film to make it even more stomach-churning (more twists and revelations perhaps) so that it might have shadowed the tension invoked by masterpieces such as "The Ring". I think Julian G is looking too hard at the bigger picture. Sod "poisoned by Hollywood", and "proper films" and that: can't it just be "good films" and "bad films"? One Hour Photo is the former, though it won't appeal to everyone (I seem to be saying that a lot).

Robin Williams good acting not withstanding, this films glacial pace and the totally anti-climatic ending makes you wonder why they made the film.

I had to check the time midway through this movie and was amazed how long it had taken an hour to pass. What is the message of this movie, "Beware of senior citizens with deadend jobs?" His daily routine was much more frightful then anything this plot could muster.

People that don't like this movie haven't hit adult maturity yet and probably have short attention spans. I thought this movie was one of the most sincere roles of Williams' career and some people just have suckie taste in movies.

Fifi hit the nail on the head - 'people that don't like this movie haven't hit adult maturity yet'. It would've been easy to follow a storyline where the family man's affair was all a big misunderstanding and Uncle Sy was killed by falling into a vat of photo chemicals while trying to escape the police, but One Hour Photo was never meant to be a shallow tale of goodies and baddies. Its strength is in the way you never quite know what to make of Sy Parish (Villain? Victim? Hero? All three?), and in some tremendous camerawork, with individual scenes often framed to look like photos, and Sy's own bland, bleached environments bursting into colour when he's with or thinking about the family. And the ending (which I won't spoil) really does put a whole new perspective on what went before. My only real complaint is that the 'blood shooting from eyes' nightmare sequence was unnecessary and innapropriate. I realise it was a reference to red-eye on a photo, but it seemed out of place to me. I'd be interested to know why a photo technician had a key for the hunting knives display too, but hey, let's not quibble. If you like films that make you think instead of relying on pryotechnics for thrills, this is an absolute classic. Expand

This film didn't work for me (and I wanted it to). I agree that the cinematography, lighting, and sound were brilliantly done. The antiseptic look and feel of the film contrasted nicely with the seedy underbelly of our psychologically damaged protaganist. Williams was superb, but the rest of the acting was hollow and one-dimensional. The film plodded along to an ending that lacked pomp or circumstance ... the film just fell flat. "One Hour Photo" is a movie that should be watched for Williams' performance as Sy The Freaky Camera Guy and for a film school lesson in cinematography, not for a solid scare. I was reminded of the original "Manhunter" (Sy and The Tooth Fairy shared many similarities ... Sy with his photos and the TF with family home movies). "Manhunter" is a far superior film. Expand

I just wanted to comment on what someone said. It is very hard to see Robin Williams as a villain. It makes you uncomfortable but that shows how well Williams plays the part. He plays the villain very well. If it didn't make us a little uncomfortable then there is a problem.

Very well done! The lighting, the way color (or lack of) was used, and the cinematography in general was incredible. I'm not a fan of Williams, but his performance was oustanding and i think his best. The whole movie i felt very creeped out by his character and that he would most certainly end up doing something absolutely horrific, but by the end he seemed to establish a character that was almost innocent and just good-hearted despite his actions. You really felt that he hadn't done anything really wrong, even when he had. Williams pulled it off brilliantly. Expand

I did not like this movie at all. I was not interested throughout the whole thing. There was one part that was completely unnecessary, that didn't really make a lot of sense. I think Robin Williams should stick to his comedy, he does a better job. This just made me think less of him as an actor. I do not recommend anyone seeing this movie, as it was not worth the money.

The movie was building up to what could have been a great movie. But as they neared the ending, it took more of a downfall. Dont get me wrong, I still think its a pretty decent movie, but it seems like they could have came up with a more creative and suspensefull ending.

Fantastic film, oscar worth performance by Williams. This film achieves incredible tension--you feel uneasy throughout--through subtil dialogue, facial clues, and best of all, terrific cinematography. Different color schemes and lighting accompany different environments. Wonderfully dark, psychological thriller.

This is a good film-- not great, but it blew me away when I saw it. This is perhaps Robin Williams's best performance in a movie. He not only acted as Sy, I felt like he became Sy. The last 30 minutes of the movie had my heart beating a mile a minute, thanks to the brilliant cinamatography, although I was never really frightened. Some will not be able to appreciate this as much as others, mainly because the plot is slow-moving. Overall I am very glad I saw One Hour Photo...lets hope Robin Williams will be able to pull off another great show like this one... Expand

Music video director Mark Romanek (one of the best music video directors) wrote and directed One Hour Photo, which is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies and creepy suspense flicks to date -- proving that Romanek has what it takes to have his way with the big screen as well as the small one.

The main strengths in this film lie in both the impeccable acting of Robin Williams, and in the subtle imagery and controlled soundscaping that both add an underlying depth. I think the setting of an average photo minilab really allows audiences to better connect the story to the context of everyday life. And while the film's plot does unfold at a pace slower than most are accustomed to, I think it a stylized touch that further gives intensity to the ending, which is not unlike the ending of such movies as "The Game," where much of the plot falls into place for the viewer. I read some of the users reviews and one stated that Indie movies are the best. This is without a question, 100% true. This could not be called an indie movie. The thing that angers me most about this movie is that it advertizes itself as one and then ends up being just like every other Hollywood movie out there. Not even, this film continues to use shallow techniques to an extent that it ends up feeling like something my sister would watch on Lifetime. For people who have been poisoned by constant Hollywood fodder, this is a half-decent introduction to a world of actual film, as it was intended, but this itself is hardly an example. More of a crossing point. Expand

It lapses into easy philosophizing in the last ten minutes, but for a good long time this is pretty compelling stuff. Romanek and Williams work together very nicely in creating this character, even if they both get heavy-handed every now and then.

A superb performance by Robin Williams raises this movie above the usual run of the mill thrillers. Although he is disturbed you cannot help but feel a certain sorrow for his character and this is what makes the movie.as the rest of it is fairly obvious stock.

A chilling atmosphere and a great performance by Robin Williams, truly demonstrating what a good actor he is (if you need further proof just watch Insomnia). One Hour Photo is a gripping and intense portrayal of loneliness and its potential effects. The film is let down by a slightly poor ending, yet this does not detract too much from the experience.

Here we have a near-perfect thriller told in classic Hitchcoc fashion. The acting and storytelling is great, and Robin Williams does really come off as one of the creepiest roles I have seen him in. Even with his creepiness, we sympathize with him and want him to succeed - at least to some extent. The story and pacing of this film both are great, and it really is a film Alfred Hitchcoc would produce if he were still alive today. I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish. The chemistry between the characters and the many twists in the story make this a wonderful little gem well worth your time to watch. Expand

Williams triumphs by exceeding both in sheer actor's craft - and the depths he plumbs in his character's tortured soul.
  3. Williams once knew how to be very still and yet allow us to see the plangent human being underneath. In One Hour Photo, Sy's scary ordinariness is a species of acting stunt. There's no there there.
