  1. Clumsily directed yet entertainingly written by Oakland native Nnegest Likké, Phat Girlz is like "Rocky" with cellulite. Or maybe "Pretty Woman" without all the bony butts. It has a lot of heart and soul, but it's almost never mean-spirited.
  2. The plus-size personality of comic actress Mo'Nique fills the screen in Phat Girlz, a sweet, if thinly plotted tale.
  3. The humor's vulgar and the plot feeble, but this is a cut above the gross-out comedies aimed at male teens, and its heroine and her gal pals keep the high jinks amiable.

Mo'Nique, a vet standup and sitcom performer whose sassy, brassy shtick isn't nearly enough to support material this insubstantial.
  5. The writing is rudimentary and the direction often awkward, but Mo'Nique would confound a veteran director.
  6. Reviewed by: Kyle Smith
The film is amateurishly directed and sluggishly paced with an anorexic plot. Even the photography, sound and costumes are substandard.

Anyone who watches this film will come out realizing that people are accepted when they accept themselves. [***SPOILERS***] Jazmin is obsessed with being skinny and feels that she can only be beautiful if she is skinny. Her feelings are so strong that when a gorgeous trim Nigerian doctor falls for her she can't believe its real love. Expand

I wasn't expecting much and was very pleasantly suprised by this movie. I couldn't find fault with any acting, only editing. The movie was genuinely funny sometimes and brought a few tears to my eyes other times. I only know Mo'Nique from "Queens of Comedy" and was a bit taken aback by the general lack of profanity in this film. My guests and I left the theatre feeling good about the film. Expand

This movie will show girls to be true to themselves with some edgy, and sassy comedy. Failed.
