A stunning-to-look-at film marred by a less than searing pace and some narrative incoherence.
  2. 80
The movie's true genius lies in the exquisite animation, a blend of hand-drawn and state-of-the-art digital technology that suggests an old world being bullied into a new one.
  3. 70
Visually commanding, conceptually beguiling, but dramatically inert.
  4. 60
The sci-fi wonders, including an army of shuddering robo-soldiers and one-man, steam-powered bombers with delicate wood-and-linen wings, are truly marvelous and go a long way toward making up for the film's erratic pacing.

Dry storytelling and boy's-toys mechanics will stop this from being the next "Spirited Away"-style crossover hit.
  6. The movie never transcended its elaborate production work to achieve an independent reality.

Simply amazing in everything. The animation, score, the characters, and the story. This is the best film I saw in 2005 and in my opinion was better than Crash and King Kong. It's even better than Akira. The non - stop rush of action scenes and machinery absorbs you into the world of Steamboy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. teamboy is clearly a prequel to Laputa: Castle in the Sky. In Laputa, we see a flashback to ancient times when the flying castles dominated the skies. Steamboy tells the story of how the first flying castle was built, perhaps thousands of years before the events in Laputa take place. The level of technology in the world of Laputa has simply reverted back to that of Steamboy's world. Expand
