A movie best seen on video so one can rewind to hear missed dialog. Excellent footage of "learning a foreign language," adapting to a strange environment, and the little guy slowly winning deserved respect. Apart from the gore, very enjoyable. Ending was fine. Bad guys were fierce, good guys brave.

Passable swords-n-savagery epic. Not great, but not nearly the disaster the production problems would lead you to think.

Personally I enjoyed this film. The age in which the film is set is realistic and the blood and guts is real.

It gets a two only beacuse a concept like this was actually made into a Hollywood movie. The concept is exciting, the execution is horrible, especially comming from the director of one of America's best all-time action flicks (Die Hard). We deserved more! We deserved exciting and dynamic characters! We deserved fantastic and epic action scenes! The result was shoddy, shoddy, shoddy everything! Expand

It's interesting when an Arabian diplomat & soldier find themselves in Scandanavia during the Dark Ages. I don't recall seeing that one recently. As for the rest of it, I have.

A magnificent epic tale where history, legend, and myth blend into a rich tapestry of bloodletting, adventure, and heroism. The performances range from intense(Banderas) to dignified, from wily to earth and boorish. McTiernan conjures up a world of mysterious forests, terrifying nights, ghostly mists, and purifying rain. It brilliantly borrows certain elements from Seven Samurai and other classics but creates something unique and sigular, and does justice to its source material, the world of the Germanic barbarians as re-imagined by Crichton in Eaters of the Dead. Thunderous, uplifting, delirious, and exhausting, the very best of its kind since Boorman's Excalibur. Expand

A thoroughly pleasing film involving an arabic diplomat gone savage-hunting warrior after being "contracted" by a group of norsemen to save a kings besieged land. Antonio Banderas fit the role well and the story was involving enough to get lost in if you paid attention, especially to the other twelve characters. Battle scenes where awe inspiring, gore and destruction rampant, even a short-lived romance between Banderas and a norse lady. Final battle could have been longer but the end scenes left the viewer with a sigh of enjoyment from the experience. Expand

Much like the stories of the Old Testiment - a spiritual battle plan for dealing with a dmonic enemy. Much closer to reality than most would care to imagine.

This gets a non-zero rating only because it is laughably bad. Please note the spelling and grammar used by those who claim to like this movie.

This movie is by far Antonio Banderas' worst film. He does not fit this type of role. He is at his best when he plays a mysterious role or a tough guy, wise-ass role. The good part of the movie was the battles. The book wasn't that good, and I give the writer of the movie credit for trying to make this a good movie. The characters should have been chosen more carefully, and maybe the movie would have had a better chance at being "good." Expand

This Crichton adaptation is nothing more than an expensive piece of mediocrity. Battles that should've been exciting are poorly edited and lit, meaning they're not all that fun to begin with. There's little, if any, thematic coherence. They've taken a lavish budget and made something ordinary and unexciting out of it. Skip this and get gladiator. If you wanna watch this, don't expect anything special. Expand

Beautifully filmed yet gruesome. For action/ adventure you don't get much better. Based on the Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf, it lives up to the expectation of heroism and tragedy. Weakness in fleshing out the characters is compensated by tearing flesh.

This must be the mutant offspring of "Conan The Barbarian" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail": it's got the schlocky bombast of the former and the cheap production values of the latter. The plot is full of holes and the action sequences, incoherent. If the Nordic actors who play the Vikings can hardly keep straight faces, why should we? Leave this one safely at the bottom of the barrel.

Not a bad little action movie, not high art but entertaining. Antonio Benderas from back when he was kinda cool. I think the smarest thing was that they don't drag the movie on and on, a quick, nice little action esk movie can be nice from time to time.

This is one of the top movies of all time. It's greatness is not measured in a single viewing but in multiple viewings. It is one of the few movies I watch over and over again, each time with more pleasure. Most movies do not inspire repeated viewings, but this one does. I've checked all my friends and they all have a copy of this movie and all feel the same way. Although upon first viewing you may indeed think it is a 7 out of 10, you will find this movie sticks with you and quickly grows on you making it that rare 10 out of 10. Watch it. I don't give spoilers you can find them on the net if you really want them. I mean it watch it. stop reading and go rent, buy, borough or steal it.... don't steal it... it's Christmas, so be good! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was butchered by the Disney editors- a shame. There's just barely enough continuity in the story line to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it immensely. Yeah, you'll have to 'suspend belief' for a while and extrapolate a little to make up for the editing. Ahmad ibn Fadlan meets the Seven Samurai, or another "Dirty Dozen" that includes a 'fish out of water'. Originally, this was a 2+ hour movie. Hopefully, someday the original version with come out on DVD or BR. A long-shot pipe dream considering Disney owns the rights and it lost money in its' theatrical release. Expand

  1. Warrior has the underwritten, overproduced bluster of "Conan the Barbarian."
  2. In tackling 1000 A.D., (McTiernan)'s suddenly an unwieldy, clunky filmmaker.
