OK, so it wasn't exactly "Oscar" material ... and it wasn't groundbreaking like "The Matrix" or as entertaining as "X-Men 2". But I LIKED IT!! All three of us who saw the movie truly enjoyed it. It did have its flaws and its low points but doesnt deserve all the horribly bad reviews its gotten. If you're looking for a 'fun' film thats enjoyable to watch ... this one fits the bill. Expand

It wasn't exactly the most meaningful film of the year, I'll give you that. On the other hand, it wasn't meant to be. This is what it promised -- an action/fantasy/special FX film which gives you a little excitement for your summer holidays. What else do you want?!

This presentation is riveting in that one must see what audaciously warped device is forced upon the preceding one. High marks for creativity, but the fact that this cobbled assemblage presumes to work is the only extraordinary thing about it.

This is an average forgettable film at its best. The characters had NO developement and didn't seem to care about each other. The action was somewhat good but nothing memorable, and the storyline was stupid and cheesey, which almost came to a b-movie storyline but didn't quite which made it worse. Oh and the CG was HORRIBLE. When the castle blew up there shouldn't have been towers still standing from that incredibly fake exposion. Thats not to say that this movie is horrible, it just isn't good action film such as the recently released, Kill Bill, however, if you do find a theatre that is playing this movie for 1.99, I would say that it isn't a bad investment. The only problem with me is that I dragged about seven friends to this film, and one of them loves it to no end. I'm sorry but it isn't that great of a film, jackass. Expand

This movie is awful! It was so bad that I spent the majority of the movie trying to think of another I hated more; I couldn't! I went in thinking this will be a typical action movie (low on plot, big on action) but even action movies have that element that makes them enjoyable. LXG lacks that element. It was so bad I didn't know if I should laugh, cry or walk out - so I did all three!

I was intrigued through all the character introductions, which seemed tongue-in-cheek at best, but the film begins to fall apart as soon as the action begins, which is a shame. The plot just gets murkier and stupider, and the special effects go from dumb to dumberer.

I've read most of the novels of the characters that were in the movie and I have to admit, they were close. Before you hate this movie give it a chance. It is pretty darn good.

Wasn't expecting brain surgery and didn't get it although was a little numb after. What the hell was going on with Mina's hair? Where did she find time for all those Perms that appeared like magic, only to then flop...bit like the movie...and then appear again. And that fight scene with Dorian was a masterfull bit of CRAP continuity...watch it again and see the perm and the skirt...NOW YOU SEE THEM, NOW YOU DON'T...etc etc. That aside I actually enjoyed it although like many of you out there I marvelled at the ability of the 'kin huge Nautilus to slink into Venice without running aground or being spotted. One of the central probelms with LXG is a similar probelm with Spawn. The story of Spwan was a twisted, dark, demented look at the psyche of a tortured man. Instead, it was turned into a PG-13, CGI-induced, brainless action flick. Same goes for this Alan Moore classic, which was a mostly dark tone towards a truly unique gallery of literature icons. Instead, we get a summer-cliched action flick. And the only reason why it was truly any good was because of Sean Connery, cause as we all know Sean Connery is God. And God is drunk. Expand

This is giving the movie a more favorable grade. It deserves so much less than a three, but has earned it because not all the actors did such a bad job at playing the role they were supposed to play. However, some of the people cast in this film were not fitting of their part. The casting--especially for Mr. Nemo--was terribly atrocious. Also, the film lacked any direction, plot, or effects. There *was* no point to the film, at least not one that was meaningful enough to the viewer. Bottom line--this movie stunk up the screen bad and it should have never made it to the theatres in the first place. Expand

Damn. Damn, damn. Damn. The problem with LXG? is that it really WASN'T a bad idea from the start. I'd not heard of the graphic novels before, but it sounds like a neat concept - all these stars of 19th and early 20th century literature banding together? I'll have some of that. But unfortunately there were a few production problems (ie everyone involved ended up hating everyone else involved with a deep passion), though whether they had anything to do with the "this'll do" nature of the script I'm loath to say...the simple fact is, despite the rather great premise, it doesn't work. And it really could have done, had they put the tiniest of tiny bits of effort into the script. It's a crock. Damn. Expand

The sad news is it probably could have been a great movie, but fell flat due to the director's love of excess and pointless explosions and FX, instead of keeping the focus on the characters themselves. I gave it a couple of extra points simply off the strength of Stuart Townsend's performance as the amoral yet charismatic Dorian Gray, who was the only character to catch and hold my attention the entire time his character was on screen. In fact, the love/hate relationship and interaction between him and Mina Harker (Peta Wilson) provided the highlights of the movie for me. Now, had the cast been thinned down one or two (eliminate the pointless Tom Sawyer character, for starters,) take away several explosions, and gave us some more character moments instead, this could have been a really good movie. I'll probably buy the DVD, but only to watch Stuart Townsend's performance over again. Expand

When the great Sean Connery looks back at his career, this is the one movie he will want expunged from his record. He is so beloved that we all feel that he is above ever making a film this bad. Unfortunately, it is what it is? And that my friends is terrible. Avoid at all costs. Sean himself has bombed the movie.

If Mina can fly, why does she get into the car? And why does Venice have streets? In Dorian Gray's library, the fight begins with gunplay, and then inexplicably, other means of waging war are deployed. Were the gun-toters out of ammo, or did the director want a variety of fighting? "The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen" borders on incompetence when Dorian Gray's portrait is revealed. With all that technology the special effects personnel have at their disposal, you would think they could top the portrait used in 1945's "The Picture of Dorian Gray". They don't. Bad dialogue, routine action scenes, and competent but boring special effects add up to one dull evening at the cineplex. Expand

Didn't anyone look at this bomb on the cutting room floor before they released it? It is hard for me to believe that with Sir Sean Connery in the flick that he permitted it to be shown without destroying it first? Possibly one of the worst movies, if not the worst, he has ever made.

I'm giving it a three. One point for Dorian Gray, One point for Tom Sawyer, and One point for Sean Connery. There isn't much plot, and it's an overly lavished action movie. Normally, I'd be happy just listening to Sean Connery read listings from the Denver white pages, but this was the sorriest Connery movie I've ever seen. Overblown, self-impressed, the literary allusions were childish and the special effects were awful. I wasn't buying the fantasy of the Nautilus cruising through the canals of Venice. Picture the Titanic in your bathtub! What were they thinking? This film won't even be remembered as a camp classic. A waste of time. Sean did this for the paycheck. Ugh. Expand

Eye candy at it's best. Interesting characters being fleshed out very well by the cast and inhabiting Carol Spier's extravagant sets. Norrington's action direction gives a certain mood that's superior to most comic book adaptations. Could have been quite extraordinary if it hadn't been for the utterly unnecessary and uninteresting character Tom Sawyer, weakly portrayed by Shane West. Worth seeing despite this flaw. Expand

I, personally, thought it was a wonderful interpretation of a great comic book. The style, the flash, the eye candy, and each ficticious character's ploys and offerings to the team made for one hell of a joy ride. A job well done, despite all of these negative reviews, it was still greatly enjoyed by some. People seem to fail to realize it was intended to be an over-the-top action movie. The irony of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is that it has the most literate pedigree of any action movie you're likely to see this year or next -- and it's been made by people who seem to have no sense of how to tell a story.
