It isn't particularly original--for one, it owes an unacknowledged debt to the French film "Them"--but as an exercise in controlled mayhem, horror movies don't get much scarier.
  2. A spare, creepily atmospheric psychological thriller with a death grip on the psychological aspect.
  3. Bertino does an excellent job building dread, especially during the first half of the movie. Every silence, pause and sudden noise startles - and the results, frankly, are more frightening than the graphic torture scenes in movies like "Hostel" and "Saw."
  4. 38
The movie deserves more stars for its bottom-line craft, but all the craft in the world can't redeem its story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite what the critics say. I found this film to be a great textbook example of what horror movies should be like. Many people have a problem with the plot. But I think that this was a much more accurate example of what evil is. When they ask why are you doing this and the girl replies ("because you were home") That's one of the best and most accurate portrayal of what evil is. Expand

It's not terrifying but it is pretty thrilling. The 2 lead characters are probably some of the dumbest people in the history of horror movies tho. Overall a pretty good movie. Expand
  3. The strangers is a creepy story, based on actual events. This isn't your typical horror movie. It moves a lot slower and lacks the cursing and gore, but what it is, is methodical and truly scary. I have so many questions I'd like to ask, but can't do it without spoilers. This movie will make you jump, make you scream, and make you think, and that's what makes it special and worth seeing. Expand

The concept was poorly executed. Had the protagonists displayed logic, rather than floundering around, their plight might have been much more convincing. As it is, with all the crawling around on the ground, leaving the woman alone, etc., the protagonists just seem stupid, one irrational move after another. No wonder she didn't want to marry him.
