"The Terminator" is a loud, noisy action "block bluster"; pretty good CGI (considering it was 1984), solid acting from Mr. governor, a dull but appealing story. Expect fun.

The tension never drops troughout the whole movie, it operates at 100% all the time, it's just amazing what James Cameron achieved here.Only recently i've finally realised that T1 is the real deal, not the chessy sequel where Arnold is not a cyborg anymore, he's very human there. Here, the perfect cold blooded villain. Cyber Punk masterpiece-top class!& that endoskeleton...omg, that stop-motion endoskeleton is hands-down the most amazing thing i've ever seen in a movie O_O The music composed by Brad Fiedel is EPIC too! One of the greatest sci-fi/action flicks ever to be made. Also, it spawned at least two amazing sequels--in which the Terminator is a protagonist rather than an antagonist? The next sequel...not so much.

Far FAR superior to the bloated Terminator 2 and don't get me started on the dumb, boneheaded Terminator 3. This is what great cult sci-fi is made of. Despite its b-movie aesthetic, it's utterly unique and never without its moments of camp self-awareness. Cameron's best film next to his visual and technical masterpiece Titanic.

The storyline and scripts are great. But with better effects this movie would have rocked.

"I am the Terminator," what agay type of movie this is. Sure some of the action scenes were pretty sweet but overall the movie totally completely sucked. Thumbs down for James Cameron.

One of the best sci-fi films ever made, brilliantly done with an imaginiative and powerful plot. Excellent special effects, well acted and relentlessly fast paced. This one will have you on the edge of your seat throughout.

For its small budget, Cameron creates a film that feels much more expensive than it is (for the most past), going to show how skilled a director he is. The 80's cultural elements feel annoying, but it makes that scene where Arnold blasts his uzi in the club even better.

One of the great sci-fi adventure films to date. This one is actually a little creepier than T2. Schawrzenegger has some funny lines. I'll be back!

Good as an action show, average otherwise. Lacks the underlying intelligence and taut continuity of Terminator 2.

The Terminator is a chase-thriller dressed up as sci-fi-action, and it's one of the very best of it's kind. I can't think of another film that had me rooting more strongly and passionately for the hero/heroine than this one. And I'm sure that's the idea. Cameron quickly outlines how you ought to feel and you spend the next hour and a half trying to feel something else. The suspense is so palpable it feels like it's oozing out of every orifice in your body (bad visual, I know). The Terminator is these days referred to often, in one way or another, and the reasons are clear: near technical perfection, great casting, outstanding cinematography, and a clever, original story - it's a landmark film. This is a good movie, BUT it shows that it was on a tight budget.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a low budget 80s flick, it was pretty damn good! The movie did a great job of introducing us to Arnold Schwarzennegar's most iconic role ever. My only complaint was that I don't like sex in the movies I watch, then again, this was directed by James Cameron, he has sex in almost all of his movies... Expand

Terminator keeps a steady diet of action flowing throughout the film, without excess of the 80's cheese. Keeping this James Cameron gem a lean, mean, fighting machine.

This is one of that movies that you want to watch it when you get bored, anytime, anywhere. I cant believe this movie affected me that much. Only one fault on this one: Kyle Reese Paradox which is not possible.

There isn't much to say except, this film is practically perfect. I think the story is extremely well written and enticing and I don't understand how anyone could say it is "dull" (review before mine) Plenty of action sequences, interesting time travel ideas, and cheesy 80s music. I LOVE IT.

  1. Director James Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd (both of whom co-wrote the script) demonstrate their storytelling virtuosity.

Schwarzenegger is presented as a lumbering slab of dumb, destructive strength--the image is more geological than human--and Cameron plays his crushing weightiness against the strangely light, almost graceful violence of the gunplay directed against him. The results have the air of a demented ballet.

Kineticism and suspense, combined with strongly conceived characters....Made Cameron a talent to watch. [13 Jan 1995, p. 67]
