Seriously, hands down- one of my favorite movies. The story is orginal. The cinematography is perfect. Jim Carey is excellent. Surely this movie is a comedy and it has it's fair share of funny moments however, the depth of this movie is what brings me back time and time again.

The plot may rarely override itself in some moments, but nevertheless "The Truman Show" is a funny but sad movie that uses wonderful performances by Jim Carrey and innovative direction from Peter Weir as its main fuel.

This film, in my opinion, was nothing more than a steaming pile of garbage. Jim Carrey should have stuck to what he does best, and that is, of course, comedy. He simply doesn't work as a dramatic actor. The rest of the cast sucks, too. The only thing that saves this from being a total disaster is Peter Weir's directing ability. But, even he was hampered by the terrible script.

A wonderful tale about how the controlling, manipulative world can be brought to it's knees by a curious mind that will not be detered. Noah Emmerich almost steals the thunder from Jim Carrey but not without some of Carrey's trademark facial expressions. Ed Harris is brilliant as Cristof, the brain behind the show in the movie. I am disappointed in myself for waiting so long to buy the bare bones dvd just because the movie is so powerful. Expand

Marvellously mocking film even more relevant today with the runaway rampage that is reality TV. Carrey is simply superb! Many doubted he could pull off such a role but he showed otherwise and without doubt is the true star of the "Show". Excellent scripting and editing, and seamless direction from Weir. It's arguable whether it will stand the test of time, but is certainly a modern day classic! Expand

I wish I could give this a 12! This movie was beyond great!!! It wasn't funny, but it was a good concept and it is quite sad how they just took Truman's life away! Jim Carrey is great in this! One of his few serious films was a good one! Stunning performance! I would recommend this movie to anyone!

This movie is so awesome in every way. It manages to prove that a funny man can break our hearts (which would happen again in Punch Drunk Love with Adam Sandler some time after). This film has one of the most original story-lines from '98 and is written to perfection. The balance of originality and great writing, not to mention Carrey, isn't the only thing that delivers a power punch. It is the message, that is explained in such a manner that even the people not searching for depth in the first place can find it, that is amazing. The depth of thought that the writers went through to get to the theme that "whatever world we are born in, we will instantly believe is real" is astonishing. The Academy made big mistakes in '98: 1. Saving Private Ryan not winning Best Picture, and 2. The Truman Show not being nominated for Best Picture, Actor, Score and Cinematography (the first two getting a win wouldn't have been an upset to me). Basically, if you want a wholly original film that is funny, heartbreaking and thought-provoking, The Truman Show is one of the best picks. Expand

Yet another movie that I've seen about 10 ten times, and it never seems to get old. The first time I saw it, I was disappointed by the ending. I wanted more. But then I realized that "story" had ended at that point. A fine job by Peter Weir, and Jim Carrey is phenomenal.

What an amazing movie. For the longest time, I thought Carrey couldnt pull off a serious role until I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which turned out to be one of my favorite movies of all time. So I decided to check this one out having no idea what is was about. I thought it was about the president or something actually. Anyway, it turned out to be really original and one of the most interesting movies Ive ever seen. Not for everyone though, my ex hates this movie and left the theater apparently without even giving it a chance. Expand

A masterpiece. In the beginning you feel lulled into a false sense of security about the crafted world Truman is placed in. From a wonderful start to a very emotional ending, the Truman Show is by far one of my favorite movies ever. The last few reviews seem to be posted by the same 12 year old, though. I knew Carrey was talented and this movie was the real demonstration of his skills. The plot is amazingly well-constructed and the details and themes (medias, allegory of the cave, existentialism, ...) are brilliantly used and true (for the world we live in)! And maybe this shocked and irritated some of the people who gave negative reviews. But hey... Wake up, welcomle to our word!

Buttered PopCorn bemoans the fact that it's not very funny. Just as well it's not a comedy, then, really. One of my favourite films, featuring stunning performances from Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Natascha McElhone and Laura Linney - who looks so much like Streep's daughter in this film that I'm not sure it's a coincidence that her character's character is called "Meryl". Also starring: Peter Weir, who reminds people why Hollywood took a chance on him in the first place: the sequence with Harris dwarfed by a huge feed of Truman sleeping is as moving as images get. Oh, and the score is one of the best ever not to be composed by Shore or Williams. Watch. This. Movie. Expand

Carrey's zanyness channelled just enough to give it direction. A statement on people's natural inclination to regard the media as a fix. Perfectly conceived, played and concluded. Slightly drug out. The flip side of Gump, who is a fictional man living reality. This is a real person living fiction.

An audacious idea for a movie, provocative in its questions about the pervasive power of modern medium and how it imprisons both the subject and the viewer in an interdependent relationship of self-deception/delusion. Also, works as an allegory about God and man. But, Jim Carrey is a shallow actor, even at the moment of his self-realization and liberation, and the movie's treatment of its themes tend toward glibness. Like Simone, created by the same writer, the movie is predicated on the notion that all of are too dumb to see thru the b.s. Expand

Perhaps it was all the hype that ruined this movie for me, and perhaps it was Jim Carrey. I am a huge fan of director Peter Weir's work, but this is not one of his best films. It seems to be missing something. It seems a little hollow and flimsy, like fake plastic trees and movie-set houses. The film lacks a truly human element to make us realize that the cardboard world we're visiting is anything but comfortable and inviting. Jim Carrey is supposed to be that human element, but somehow, he fails at being human. Perhaps it's his eccentric enthusiasm that makes him seem too happy in his surroundings to question them. Someone a little less demonstrative and a little more melancholic might have the subtlety and introspective nature to realize he was out of place. Someone like, dare I say, Nicolas Cage. Save Jim Carrey for the Broadway version, please! Expand

The figurine was simply perfect. The script, I should say that if you don't count the cliche's, so is too. The acting was amazing, but the scenario could have been better. The soundtrack would have been better if it wasn't for one single song that was bad. The skin of the film was bad. Like, really, really bad. The choice for the actors was great, if you don't count that they chose that actress to do Sylvia. She isn't beautiful enough to do a woman who makes a men fall in love with her at the first sight. But she was a great actress. The special effects (that were supposed to be bad) were really perfect, as was the make-up and the hair. And finally, the photography of this film was absolutely perfect.
