This movie was written by an Englishman based on his tourist's postcard impression of Ireland and its people, and it wasn't even filmed there. It's condescending to its audience to the point of insult, and I'm not even Irish. Its would-be feel-good vibes are belied by genuinely creepy undertones: the closeness of the preist and the boy, the mean-spirited dispatch of the old lady, and the ultimate revelation of the boy's parentage. And can we be so certain that all that money won't corrupt the townspeople? This is the first of many mediocre films that ride on the coattails of Full Monty; a superior, if not superlative, film. Stick with The Quiet Man; it's also faux-Irish, but at least it was filmed there, and has Barry Fitzgerald in it. Expand

The fact that none of the players are really much recognizable past "Oh that's the guy from that one thing" status only adds to this movie's credibility--wild as it becomes at times. The fact is that it's smart and makes you feel good. You can care about the characters as if they were real, because they SEEM real. Good fun.

What Ned's surname's doing in the title I don't know, but I press on - if Ealing had been in Ireland, this is the kind of film they would have made - a gentle, warm slightly scattershot comedy, populated by faintly lovable eccentrics and faintly eccentric loveable people, and if that's not enough for you, you're dead inside.

Not really my kind of movie but it's really a good movie. Heart warming and funny. If you liked The full monty you'll like this flick.

An unabashed excursion into feel good territory.

Predicated on the slimmest of notions, this debut by Jones is so cuddly-cute in its desire to be pleasing that it's all but transparent.

Writer-director Kirk Jones has the movie roll over, fetch and chase its own tail in order to make you love it.
