Hilarious. This movie will have you rolling, but I must warn you that it is not for everyone. You have to appreciate the crazy senseless humor that John Reily does so well. For fans of slapstick parody, walk to your nearest theater and walk hard.

Being a huge judd apatow fan i was going into this movie with high hopes, and all of these hopes were fulfilled. I am definitely now convinced that all of these magazines and other reviewer have no idea what they are talking about and have lost the sense of smart ridiculous humor. If you like any of his other movies, you will definitely love this movie. Walk Hard!

Walk Hard got me to laugh, but they weren't big laughs. It was more like "ahhh, that's kind of funny." I usually like Apatow's efforts, but his writing co-credits on this film don't do his catalogue justice. Many of the gags seem shoehorned into the genre parody and just don't do the job well enough over the course of the film to warrant anything more than a "meh" and a justifiably middle of the road rating. This movie was not nearly as funny as I had hoped, the jokes were re-hashed. Terrible writing and equally poor acting. Very disappointing. There seemed to be no point to some of the gags, they just didn't work.

This is a fantastic movie that has a lot more to offer than just a Walk The Line parody. As long as you keep your mind open and don't mind seeing a few penis's, I definitely recommend this movie. Also, for a comedy, this movie has fantastic music, I've had "Walk Hard" stuck in my head for days now.

This movie was awful. The scene that forced us to stare at some guy's genitals was about as painful as John C. Reilly's jokes. Mr. Reilly, you were the reason Talladaga Nights was awful, and you didn't keep me from vomiting throughout this flick.

Is it too soon to make jokes about Johnny Cash? I think so, even though "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is meant to skewer the musical biopic more than the man in black himself. Cash fans may cringe at jokes about his legendary drug abuse and estranged relationship with his father. Laughter transcends bad taste, but therein lies the problem with "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", a lot of the humor inspired by "Walk the Line" is simply not funny. The surreal, and unexpected use of gore will drop jaws. It seems phoned in from another movie. Dewey also tries on so many musical hats, he never comes across as a real artist. The only songs that work are those in the country vein. Brian Wilson fans may bristle at Cox's "Pet Sounds"-influenced sessions. "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a cold-hearted assemblage of obvious jokes that satirize the drug-addled life of a musical superstar, often without any heart or wit. Expand

This is a classic. This movie pushes the envelope in contemporary America. The jokes are sophisticated and funny. I haven't seen a movie this good since Rushmore. This movie takes on anti-semitism, the absurd war on drugs and other sensitive topics with humor and honesty.

Mr. Apatow, I know Spinal Tap. And this movie, sir, is no Spinal Tap. I barely laughed through this movie. Highly overrated and overhyped, many of the jokes cames across as underwhelming and overused.

I like John C. Reilly very much and expected this to be an embarrassingly stupid yet occasionally very funny movie. It threw me because it has fewer stupid slapstick moments than I expected and those it has weren't that funny. For me, it missed big time. Dull and not funny.

Halarious. Like Anchorman where the joke is taken WAAAAY too far but if you're along for the ride, enjoy. Stupid, utterly stupid. But also very very funny. True, not laugh-out-loud funny, but funny. It's really too bad that due to "Knocked Up" and "Superbad," people will expect near-perfection from Apatow and Co. Take the expectations away and this is a funky little way to spend 90 minutes, with or without the wacky-tabacky. Expand

It's all good, but the scene where Tim Meadows answers Dewey's questions about marijuana and the hilarious Dylanesque songs (and I love Dylan) are worth the price of admission alone. This is probably not for everyone. I think you need to be "of a certain age" and love popular music--yet be able to laugh about some of its pretensions--to really understand and enjoy the film.

Went there not knowing what to expect. I am not a Johnny Cash fan so that didn't hinder my perspective of the film. I found it very funny, very entertaining...and not in a slapstick way, but in a way of wit and irony. It is one of those movies that you'll see a second time and laugh harder. The soundtrack is remarkably solid, too. It does satire a couple of groups that do not really have a sense of humor about themselves...so you're sure to get some people denigrating the film because they walked out insulted. But it is all in good fun, and if you don't laugh out loud at least a few times, therapy may be in your best interest. Expand

If not for the hilarious Beatles moment and the Bob Dylan spoof, this movie would be nothing more than jokes told around the couch with a bunch of guys with beers in their hands and Dylan on the stereo. The movie might as well have a big sign that says "LAUGH NOW" everytime a joke is on screen. I was dissapointed to say the least.

In the commercials, they said that it was made from the same director or producer from "Superbad" and "knocked up". I would've never guessed it. It didn't even come close to being as funny as them. The humor in that movie was soo retarded. I think i honestly laughed once or twicce the whole time.

Can't believe someone compared this movie to Anchorman. The only similarities for me is that they're movies. Anchorman was hilarious. Dewey Cox was simply not funny and boring. There was nothing clever or smart about any of the jokes. Dewey pretty much plays the straight man too. The idea was good but the movie I thought was one big waste of time and money.

I found myself near a movie theatre with 10 dollars and nothing to do, and out of the six films playing, this was what I chose to see. Knowing the basic story, and knowing Judd Appatow was involved I chose to see it. This is more like Anchorman then anything else He's been involved with for certain, and I was pleasantly surprised considering how unfunny the trailers and commercials were. Very tongue in cheek, and some awesome performances from John C. Reilly and Tim Meadows. Overall, not a great movie, but a fun movie that was worth the 5.50 matinee I payed to see it. Expand

Mr. Apatow has got to stop reading his own press. Not everything that springs forth from his imagination is funny. This certainly isn't. In its proximity to biopics that came out in the last couple of years, it displays the laziness of the Scary Movie/Date Movie franchise. The Spinal Tap comparisons may not be fair, but they are only natural given the theme, and suffice it to say that Walk Hard suffers in comparison. There were exactly two bits that evinced a bit of comedic imagination: the Beatles' encounter (I am sure much of that was ad libbed by Jack Black, Jason Schwartzmannm, et al) and the Dylan spoof. The rest was no better than a bad SNL skit, extended ad nauseam. Reilly is a decent singer, though. They should have cast him in Sweeny Todd! Expand

Funny movie, but it has a problem with audiences. It has a style of humor only young people will like, but it's full of references only old people will get. Honestly, how many people who know enough about Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the rest to appreciate the jokes would actually go for dumb humor? And, as judging by the other comments, the dumb humor wasn't even quite dumb enough to satisfy the dumb humor buffs. Mr Derek P: You KNOW you laughed at the naked fight scene in Borat, so don't pretend the naked people scene really bothered you in this. Expand

One of the funniest, sharpest and most inspired parodies I've seen since, well This Is Spinal Tap. Some of the references will go over some people's heads (well, most, based on the reviews here), but this well-acted and crafted -- the music numbers are as good as most record -- piece is definitely worth a second look. I liked it more than Knocked Up or Superbad, actually.

Does this movie have some hilarious moments? Yes. Does this movie have parts where it drags a little? Absolutely... This is a real real funny movie- especially when you sing along with the songs. Most of the songs were written by Dan Bern who is a great singer/songwritter in his own right. Really loved it saw it 3 times - can't wait for the WALK HARDER the extended version on DVD in March.

Amusing satire on just about every musical biography film ever made, John C Reilly pulls it all off, and gives a talented performance. It does begin to wear thin after an hour or so, but it's a fun movie.

The "Cox" jokes that the movie insists on making every 3 minutes generate exactly zero laughs. But other than that almost everything works in this very funny send-up of biopics, the history of Rock and Roll, the cultural fads of the past 40 years and how they all blend together in our collective conciousness. Plus the music is really pretty decent. It is funnier than Spinal Tap and has better music. What more do you want? Expand

Lights years ahead of typical parodies (Meet The Spartans, Epic Movie, etc.), but still disappointing. Reminds me of Will Ferrell's movies, which generally contain a few inspired laughs among unbearably flat scenes that seem to go on forever.

It's the same joke, over and over again. So if you think it's funny the first time, you'll love this movie. I for one, thought it drew too much from "Walk the Line," and therefore they weren't able to actually go anywhere new with the movie, and it became a cliche biopic satire flick.

Hilarious, John C. Reilly is perfect as title character and Jenna Fischer showed me a side that I had never seen before. In fact, it kind of scared me. This movie keeps proving that Judd Apatow is the master of today's comedy and the music was most excellent. It almost convinced me to go and buy the album.

It saddens me to see that this often hilarious movie is drifting into obscurity. Walk Hard is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time, and only suffers from the occasional slow section that just barely drags it out of the top echelon of raunchy comedies. If you are even marginally interested in this movie, check it out, and you likely won't be disappointed. Adequate litmus tests to determine if you would enjoy this movie include: 1) Did the title make you chuckle? 2) Do you enjoy other Apatow movies? and 3) Did you enjoy the comedic stylings of the comedy troupes The State or Kids in the Hall? If you answered yes to any of these, give this movie a shot, and spread the good word. Expand

  1. The movie walks the line of surreal vulgarity (you will not, repeat not, expect the penis), yet most of it, intentionally, is less nutzoid than your average megaplex genre parody.
  2. 63
The tricky thing about parody movies is that the jokes get old fast and they're hit-and-miss. Walk Hard, a spoof of every musical biopic from "Ray" to "Walk the Line," is guilty on both counts. How lucky that when the jokes do hit, they kick major ass.
  3. A pitch-perfect musical comedy that at long last moves the talented John C. Reilly up the billing ladder from second banana to top banana.
