The acting was great, and the battle realistic and gut wrenching. Right next to "Saving Private Ryan" and "Apocalypse Now" as one of the best war movies ever made. Had the dialogue been better this movie would have been a 10.

Not as good as saving private ryan or black hawk down, but an amazingly excellent movie nonetheless. Not at all like Platoon, which showed most of the soldiers as psychotic killers, this movie shows them as the first soldiers in vietnam who were the first to experience its horrors.

It's hard to belive in a film whose emphasis is action, when the "why" of it all is not explored, or even mentioned. The battle scenes might have saved it, but alas, the are as contrived and generic as your typical episode of Walker Texas Ranger. The filmakers fail miserably in suspending the disbelief. I expected MUCH more out of the team who made Braveheart. Perphaps Gibson himself should have helmed this one. Expand

For the first 30 minutes, I thought I was watching the squarest Viet Nam movie ever made; the anti-Oliver Stone film. Once the battle starts though, it's hard not to be riveted by what's happening. Very well executed.

I would have given a higher rating but I couldn't stand the cheesy one liners when everyone dying saying, "I'm glad I did this for my country". It just got to pathetic after awhile, what soldier would say those lines when their dying. Plus I'm just burned out on war movies, "Black Hawk Down," "Hart's War," enough already, stop the madness.

Staggering, graphic illustration of good men, loyal to the death to their friends, selflessly responding with honor, back-to-back, against impossible odds. The spoiled snots who spat on soldiers 30 years ago will hate it. There is nothing new under the sun.

A good war film is one that makes you realise that you dont want to go and fight one. American soldiers are without any doubt amongst if not the bravest in the world. It is time that the American Nation sat up and realised that it wasnt the soldiers it was the people who put them there. Great film but they should have included the debrief with McNamara and Westmorland if that was a true debrief.

I can't believe I've spent 9 bucks on this POS. Totally unrealistic, totally strange. Where is the front line the enemy has broken through ? We never got introduced to a line. I left the flick after gibsons 47th praying monologue scene ...

Better than I expected, but still flawed. The one liners were terrible, and the characters seemed less real as a result. It's the only movie I can remember which attempted to give a face to the Vietnamese, though it could have expanded on that. Despite all the cheese, it's still worth seeing.

I really liked this war movie. It showed how the families have to deal with war and also how the other side has young men just trying to do what men in power tell them to do.

What a movie!, there may have been some bits of cheesiness in there but it's cancelled out by the battle scenes, Mel Gibson's performance and the sheer energy of the film.

Solid recreation of combat in Vietnam. I have been there and done that. I went into the Ia Drang twice during my tour. There are some things which I take exception to; they still can't salute and the aeriall scenes were a bit crowded. The intensity, honesty and courage of the men in that fight cannot be denied and cannot be compromised. It is not the same garbage as Apocalypse Now and Platoon. It is a movie that finally gives some credit to the Vietnam Veteran as a dedicated, honest, courageous, well trained soldier, ready to die for his country when called. And a lot of us did die. br Expand

One of the most riveting war movies I have seen. You nearly forget at times the US were runners-up in this war. Better than Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down. Things have moved on a bit from when I thought the "Red Badge of Courage" was great when it first came out.

I think this movie shows the reality that some wish to hide... Obviously, those who rated this movie low skipped out on the horror of the Vietnam War. I'm only 18, but my dad has told me stories of this tragic war. We Were Soldiers is one of the best portrails of the Vietnam War that I have ever seen. (China Beach, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, etc.)

This is one of my favourite war movies. It perfectly depicts the human suffering that accompanies war very graphically. Another good note is that the movie isn't biased, it doesn't dehumanize either side as being monstrous and instead evokes one's sympathy for how tragic and sad bloodshed can be.

Made very well, and is extremely intense. It is good that a war film be made as violent and as intense as this, cutting the BS. Because that is how to perhaps shock some out of apathy and show how truly evil, and senseless war is. A better film might have shown both sides a bit more evenly, to better humanize each side, for the true tragedy of war is that one is not fighting demons on the other side of the battle, but rather a soldier much like themselves. Did everything right on the battlefield. Tried to be about everything else and push all the right buttons as well. Has the unmistakable stench of a movie the studio meddled with. But it's still important as a new addition to the Vietnam record.

  1. You don't really watch the film; you survive it.
  2. It's a shame that the book "We Were Soldiers Once . . . And Young" fell into the hands of writer-director Randall Wallace ("Braveheart"), a filmmaker who wouldn't recognize subtlety and understatement if they were to attack him in the street.
  3. Gibson may get top billing, but it's Sam Elliott who steals all the scenes. As Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley, a man who fires with his own .45 revolver rather than the standard M-16 rifles, he's full of hilariously colorful comments.
