Drugs, prostitutes, suicide and a cute little bunny. I have seen tons of indie films this year and this is the one that grabbed me. Wheels is gritty, raw and and is so well done on so many levels. The score for the film is so fantastic and Mickey's fading memory was captured so very well. DO NOT MISS THIS FILM! This movie hooks you with great underwater darkness and by the time it's over, you feel like you have been hit over the head with reality. There's a true essence of pain that prevails through the end of the film and when it's all said and done, you walk out feeling the pain of a man who has been through hell to find himself on the other side.
This movie is finally out on all digital platforms!! Links are below!
I am so excited abou this it's about time. This Award Winning dark-humored drama follows Mickey (played by Warren), a suicidal paraplegic who can’t seem to kill himself. Mickey offers a hilarious, wild-eyed homeless junkie named Drake (played by Hume) $500 to shoot him in the head. In a twist of fate, an unlikely friendship develops and the two end up hustling through the streets of Los Angeles to find purpose and belonging. Although they find temporary relief from their woes in heroin, cocaine, alcohol and prostitutes, their drug-induced adventures ultimately take them back to the source of their troubles.
Awesome movie! Very few movies portray friendship and brotherhood as endearing as Wheels. But, what makes this movies so amazing is the way it addresses such dark subjects as suicide, drug use, and homelessness with such grace and dignity and even lightening it up with humor. I definitely recommend this movie!
I got a flier for the film and looked it up on Facebook. After reading about it and watching clips and stuff, I was sold. Saw it yesterday at The Crest in Westwood. Honestly, I was expecting a film of questionable production quality. What I saw was the complete opposite. It was very well done and thoroughly entertaining. It was also surprisingly hilarious despite the serious subject matter. I love it when a movie can do that. Good stuff.
Basically: Go see it. It's a great indie flick and deserves the support. Heck, I might go see it again for good measure.
I happened across this flick in Westwood the other night. I think it was the Crest Theater, one of those old school movie palaces. Anyway, I was really happy I stumbled across it because this was a really cool indie flick. Beautifully shot, scored wonderfully, and the story was really touching. Very well done.
I caught this movie at the Crest in Westwood on Thursday. I like finding small indies to check out so I usually try and hit up the Crest a couple times a month. Going in to it I didn't really know anything about the film so I didn't have any expectations and was pleasantly surprised. WHEELS tells the story of two paraplegic, homeless drug addicts and the craziness they get up to all around LA. It sounds kind of depressing, and don't get me wrong, it's definitely on the deeper/serious side, but there's some dark humor that keeps it funny and the friendship between the two main guys is a really touching aspect of the film. Layers are revealed in flashbacks so you learn how the two got to where they are and there's some pretty crazy shockers. There was a Q & A with the filmmakers after the show and when you hear what these guys went through to get this film made, it's the kind of indie story that I love to hear about. True passion for filmmaking! The movie is shot beautifully, the cinematography is gorgeous and looks really expensive so I was shocked to hear them talk about how they made the movie on a nonexistent budget. Overall, a beautiful, heartfelt story, well-done film, definitely different than anything the major studios pump out. The cast is all unknowns but the acting was quite good. I would highly recommend WHEELS if you like indie films and enjoy watching true storytelling.
Gee, six user reviews, all 10s and all saying pretty much the same thing, often in nearly the same words! Not living in Westwood, I can't visit the Crest to see if it's indeed (1) packed and (2) showing the best film EVER, according to Metacritic's user rankings. What any non-moron can see is that one person wrote all six reviews, which is actually kind of an insult--both to "Wheels" and to the users who post their (usually) well-considered judgments here. So my zero is for cynically using Metacritic to promote a film.
