  • Summary: Jimmy loves dinosaurs and sleeps on the top bunk. Unfortunately, Jimmy is 40 and shares that bunk with his 10-year-old nephew. Freshly divorced, Jimmy lives with his sister Aiko and her family while boldly searching for a new wife. And although Jimmy may lack social grace, he is convinced the best years of his life are just beginning. His plan seems like it's all falling into place when Tak's beautiful niece Ramona moves in. But once Jimmy sets his sights on stealing her from his best friend, Tim, he sees his intentions go hilariously awry. (Variance Films) Expand

  1. Will wring some laughs out of anyone but the most humor-impaired.
  2. Its tone is pleasant and its humor, charming.

Its amusingly off-kilter humor underserved by pedestrian packaging, Dave Boyle's sophomore feature, White on Rice, is the kind of comedy that hinges on a protagonist near-imbecilic in all matters social, physical and especially romantic.

At its best, this uneven film by writer-director Dave Boyle suggests that going a bit nuts is a good thing for the rigid paterfamilias.

    Bland and only occasionally funny.
  6. Reviewed by: Aaron Hillis
Granted, Boyle may be a competent director, but he’s missed the mark by not focusing on anybody with real heart: the father and his son, the cousin and her beau--basically, every person here who isn’t a cretinous, developmentally arrested creep.
  7. It's revealing that writer-director Dave Boyle has said that in a way he fulfilled his lifelong ambition to be a cartoonist with the live-action White on Rice because his people in this wan, trite and increasingly silly comedy are little more than stick figures.

This is a quirky comedy, there's no denying. But I was laughing through most of the film, and was very pleased with the way it culminated with a satisfying resolution. No, not everybody got what they longed for. But they got what they needed. And they enjoyed the journey. What more can you ask for? Expand
