When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to either bestow rigorous attention and force of thought as befits application of solid evaluatory process to a cinematic presentation, or simply taking a nap, this film makes the second choice imperative.

Truly painful cinematic experience. How can accompolished actors like Hanks and Ryan involve themselves in such tripe? And Alice Z...oh my god, you cannot be serious?

Ah, what an original and thought-provoking film..Wait.....nope. Admittedly though, this is probably Ms. Ephron's best film, which pretty much means that it is about on par with some of Pauly Shore's best work. Only somewhat redeeming quality is tom hanks (why did he agree to star in this crap again?).

A valentine to the happenstance miracle of lovers and other strangers, a movie that regards modern romance as something that is, ultimately, old-fashioned to its core.

A perfectly enjoyable star vehicle that does exactly what it sets out to do. [7 May 1999, p.66]
  3. This is filmmaking as a minor feat of engineering, the kind where even the gossamer emotions seem like prefab components -- charm, whimsy, serendipity, all so many discs plugged into the hard drive.
