Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it. Vanita Harbour is living proof that setting goals and believing works.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Vanita is the youngest of four children. "The Harbour family is very close," says Vanita. "My Mom is my best friend. I talk with her every day." Growing up, Vanita would spend summers in Chicago with her sister. "My sister had a huge impact on me by always encouraging me to follow my dreams."
A gifted child, at eight she was playing the piano and taking tap lessons. "My teacher was 78 years-old and to do the tap routines, I had to hold her up! She was a real inspiration to me, guided my career and encouraged me to attend the youth program at the Cleveland Playhouse."
By the time she was eleven years old, Vanita had decided to be an actress. She actively pursued her goal. "My dream was to be on General Hospital, so I wrote in my journal about working there. I just knew in my heart I would be apart of that show."
Annie Get Your Gun was her first play, and she won the part of the lead dancer. Every night she would dance with a 7 foot boa constrictor named Monty. "I had a special connection with Monty. As soon as the lights came up Monty got excited and wound himself so tightly around me that it took two stagehands to unwind him after the number!"
Vanita attended the Cleveland School of the Arts as a dance and drama major. "She was always fascinating to watch," said Dr. Abookire, the school's artistic director. "She had a real glow... one who had real brilliance." Dr. Abookire was a great influence on Vanita and helped to develop her confidence. While at the School of the Arts, Vanita was chosen to perform at the Great Lakes Theatre Festival.
Vanita continued her formal education earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. As the university is considered a League School, the senior class was taken to New York City to audition. She got an agent and soon television audiences became familiar with Vanita as Rika Price on One Life to Live. She fell in love with her co-star, Allan Dean Moore and the couple married in 1993.
Her other television credits include guest starring roles on E.R., The Hughleys, Gideon's Crossing, Vengeance Unlimited, Port Charles, Dream On, Living Single, Muddling Through and the television movie Running Mates on TNT.
On Broadway Vanita starred in the rousing musical, Once On This Island and was nominated for the prestigious Helen Hayes Award. She remained with the production going on the national tour. Other theatrical credits include the lead in Nomathemba at the Steppenwolf Playhouse, the title role in Hedda Gabler at the Studio Theatre and Blues in the Night at the Pasadena Playhouse.
As Assistant District Attorney Dara Jensen on the ABC award-winning daytime drama General Hospital, Vanita is fulfilling her childhood dream. But for Vanita herself, having a much recognized face in the world of daytime television is only the tip of the enormously talented iceberg.
Vanita's oldest brother Gary recently collaborated with Vanita on her latest project, a music CD. Vanita wrote the lyrics for Love Showed Me the Way, Gary composed the music and together they arranged it. "I would like people to be touched by the song and feel what was behind the music – to share love, with each other."
Vanita enjoys playing the piano, walking on the beach with her husband and spending time with their son Ezra. "My son is the light of my life, full of energy and in awe of the world and mommy. I always want to see safety and security in his eyes. So I work very hard to be the best human being I can be for my child."… Expand
