Yoko Kanno

Biography: Yoko Kanno is well known in the West for her Anime (Japanese animated shows) compositions. Her style is eclectic, ranging from jazz and orchestral works to rock, electronic and new-age pieces. She is also an accomplished keyboardist and has performed some of her popular works both in the studio and on stage.Born in Miyagi, Japan, she was expected to become a novelist when she grew up. However, she developed a love for music and taught herself how to play the keyboard. With no formal training, she was soon composing small musical pieces. It is rumored that as a teenager she composed a song for a boy she admired. When she entered collage to study Japanese Literature, she realized that music was more important then becoming a novelist and she left after a week.She debuted as a keyboardist for the Japanese band "TETSU100%". Working with the band, she gained a reputation and began composing for commercials and video game themes. Reading the manga (graphic novel) associated with the anime, she wrote several ideas for the theme. Victor chose one and used it as the theme for the series. The company was so pleased with her work that they sent more projects to her.Over the years, she's composed the soundtracks and themes for "Cowboy Bebop", "Wolf's Rain", "Esconflowne" and many other anime. Currently her work can be heard in the series "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex".She is married to composer Hajime Mizojuchi, whom she met while working on the "Please Save My Earth" and "Esconflowne" soundtracks.
