The lovely scenery belies the show’s serious content because all the participants seem to be going through something stressful. ... The people on this series seem like regular folks you meet every day, which makes watching them go through this experience intriguing.
Beautifully shot and leisurely paced, Castaways is essentially Naked and Afraid without the winking titillation, or Survivor without the obstacle courses and interpersonal fireworks. If that makes it sound just this side of boring... well, that’s about right.
The more "real life" is integrated into Castaways, the more false it feels: Forcing messy personal history into brief scenes in the "Lost" template is an uneasy fit. [31 Jul 2018, p.77]
