  • Summary: Based on Australian police detective Colin McLaren's four years of research, the documentary recreates scenes to illustrate the theory first offered in the 1960s by ballistics expert Howard Donahue and later written about in the 1992 book by Bonar Menninger, "Mortal Error: The Shot that Killed JFK," that a Secret Service agent accidentally shot the president. McLaren doesn’t come off as a conspiracy theorist or an agenda-crazed obsessive. He comes off as a detective building a case. But then, so do others. And only one can be right.

Recycled theory with some fresh perspective--but it still smells recycled.

A docudrama, the REELZ film finds its focus in ballistics talk, much of it intriguing, and ballistics tests. Better yet, it manages to maintain a certain suspense--that having to do with the wait for the inevitable other shoe to fall. The time that invariably arrives in films of this kind, when documentary moves on to derangement.

Stuffed with stilted actor re-enactments--and repeated shots of a mock John F. Kennedy corpse with its skull blown open--Smoking Gun basically regurgitates the 1992 book Mortal Error and its conclusion that a Secret Service agent accidentally fired the third and fatal shot.

I don't see the JFK in here, boss. JFK The Smoking Gun is about the horrific event that even Parkland couldn't save in its runtime. The story is well researched and all, but this doc is really boring. Bundles of info smashing in your face like wind! I watched the whole season and nothing was changed. Same old story in episodes, boring episodes. I would say I you are a die hard JFK fan than you might let it go but other guys- not so much. Expand
