John Oliver is one of the very few personalities on television that is willing to be passionate about what he believes in and tell you exactly how he feels, whether it is popular or not. While he made his name on his show in it's first two seasons by concentrating on topics that other "news" outlets were not willing to report on, either because they were too sensitive or because they were just completely oblivious to them even existing, this third season mainly deals with the 2016 presidential election. This seems to have rubbed some long time fans the wrong way, but it makes sense that of course this would be his and his teams main focus since it is the biggest issue going on in both the U.S.A., and the entire world. He still occasionally calls attention to the other, less covered topics, but it would be irresponsible to not shift his main focus to the presidential election.
Obviously, the main issue many viewers took to this was the general Clinton/Trump fatigue that was taking over every single person, but I found his analysis to be something of an antidote to the normal coverage. Oliver tackled the issues in his own unique and sometimes vicious way, going after both candidates with an aggressive attack week after week that the vast majority of other commentators would be too scared to even attempt.
In my opinion, we are in desperate need of a man like John Oliver, who can both make us laugh in the fact of such turbulent times while still making us stare them dead in the eyes instead of ignoring them. I think that this may have been his best season yet because of all of these factors, and I can't wait to see how he tackles everything coming up in 2017. February cannot come fast enough.
This is the first season I watched the full episodes and during its running, and I have to say, it holds up excellent. Although the theme of tha season in general was not fun (But with this year, how could it have been) the way Joh presents the topics, and the level of research done is simply superb. And in more than one episode, O found myself laughing all the way. Great show, can't wait for next season.
It just didn't seem to cut it this season. Maybe it was the election cycle or change of personnel? Sometimes very poor indeed and absolutely miles away from Sam Bee
Can we cut down the shows dedicated to Trump from 4 in 5 to 1 in 5?
John Oliver is great but continually going over the same issues in a more ham-fisted way than usual is massively reducing the appeal of this show.
The shows probably got one more week to add variety for me or I will be switching off for good.
