  • Starring: Ian Buchanan, Everett Greenbaum, Tracey Walter
  • Summary: David Lynch and Mark Frost followed Twin Peaks with this strange screwball comedy set at a fictional 1950s television network, with stars Ian Buchanan and Miguel Ferrer also coming over from Twin Peaks. ABC debuted the show without fanfare in the summer, then yanked it from the schedule after three episodes; four additional (unaired) episodes were filmed and can be found (with the first three) on DVD in some countries, though not yet in the U.S. Expand

On the Air is unfunny, but not in a stupid Who's the Boss? way — rather, in a bizarre, so-corny-it's-surreal way.

The show's comically choreographed mayhem is a difficult premise to sustain, like trying to stage a big bumper-car pileup again and again. So be sure to watch—and tape—this week's pilot directed by Lynch. It's a doozy.

It has a strange, surreal quality. I usually like strange. But this is strange strange ... Actually come to think of it, "On the Air" may be the most stupid thing I've ever seen. [18 Jun 1992]
