What's remarkable about this quartet, and why Push Girls proves that reality shows can actually be intelligent and engaging, is that in most ways the women's lives are in fact not all that remarkable.

[These women make] instant impact, of course, with their stories but also through sheer personality.

The fact that Push Girls borrows heavily from the Real Housewives format is initially worrying, given the sensitive subject matter, but ultimately seems like a savvy, on-the-side-of-the-angels move.

It is, in other words, one more cable reality show about fabulous women. But in this case, the same old reality show is a refreshing change.

Despite the leisurely pace of the filming, which lacks a certain amount of dramatic tension, there's a fiery spirit to Push Girls that cannot be ignored.

Push Girls is more "Sex and the City" than "Real Housewives"--and more real than they've been--at least up until now.

The premiere episode tends to lapse into a "You go, girl" mode typical of shallow treatments of disability, with fist-pumping and treacly background music.

Push Girls is at its best when the women tell their stories and depict the challenges they face in everyday life. But when the show's stars convene for gabfests, it feels as inauthentic as other docu-series.

Push Girls is not as edifying as it might be, but it's not sanctimonious either.
