  • Starring: Dana Carvey, Robert Smigel, Stephen Colbert
  • Summary: The SNL veteran's short-lived (only seven episodes aired) primetime sketch comedy series may be little remembered now, but it was a launching pad for new talent. The show featured a young Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert in its cast, while the writing staff included Charlie Kaufman, Louis C.K., Jon Glaser, Dino Stamatopoulos, Dave Chappelle, and Spike Feresten. Meanwhile, staff writer Robert Smigel used the show to debut animated shorts such as the Ambiguously Guy Duo. Expand

The hit-and-miss Carvey maintained a pretty impressive batting average for its first two weeks, thanks in part to a hopped-up pace that didn't allow the stinkier bits to linger too long. But under pressure from sponsors (to tone down the gross humor) and ABC (to keep up the ratings between Home Improvement and NYPD Blue), Carvey has fallen back into old SNL habits. Which means protracted one-joke talk-show-host parodies.

If Carvey were actually funny and not just dead-on, I guess this would be brilliant.
